How do I know if I have bad tubes?
« on: 15 Jun 2009, 04:34 pm »
So went to listen to my system (DAC > Candela > Stratos Monos) yesterday, and no sound.  Wait, a very feint sound, i.e. had to turn way up to hear it just a little bit.

I also have a HT Receiver connected to the HT bypass, and it worked fine.  So I know the amps / speakers are OK.

I tried a different stereo source with the same results.  So I know the source is ok, which points the issue at the Candela.  Does this symptom sound like bad tubes?  Kinda wierd, because it's both channels at exactly the same time.  Plus the tubes do continue to "glow".  And it does power up, so don't think it would be a fuse.

Any thoughts?  I plan to call Klaus later today to discuss.

Thanks, Bob

I doubt it's both tubes,,have you tried by-passing the dac to rule it out? Keep us posted as to what you find please,,and good luck,,BTW,,you could always roll another pair of tubes,,but somehow,I doubt that's the problem.Good luck.

Yes, i tried another stereo source.  A DAP with dock connected to another pair of inputs.  So I know it's not the source.

Bob,

It is very unlikely that both tubes will go out at the same time in a preamp...tube failure normally occur as explained a couple times before at the very beginning (first five minutes or less) that it will be caught at the initial testing-burning (prior to shipping). Subsequent tube failure will be seen as 1)... a open filament, immediately seen as it will not turn (light up) on, 2)...a massive internal short, that will blow protective fuses instantly and 3)... when they get very (I mean very) old they will sound congested with no dynamic impact and very fuzzy.

You most likely have a bad connection or something loose. As stated earlier in my PM I will call you later on.

Thanks,
Alex

Update: Sent it in and Alex tells me it was a failed on/off switch.  Some how it took out one of the phases.  Should have my unit back in a few days.  As always, great customer service from Odyssey.
