Proper Monitor placement
« on: 5 Jun 2009, 04:40 am »
Hi, I've been really enjoying reading some of the post and topics in this forum, so much that it has helped me to get back into wanting to have my system set up proper or say correct. I know that listening to music has a lot to do with personal preference, but at the same time there are also the general rules of setting up or a starting point from which you can personalize. With that said could someone please give me an idea of how high off the floor and how far apart a pair of 2-way Canton book shelf speakers (5.25 woofer/soft dome tweeter) should be set at?

You'll want the tweeters at ear level, the speakers pulled out into the room at least a foot or two from rear and side walls, and you'll have to experiment with toe-in on your own.

What he said, and also, don't be afraid to move them around. Give them a good listen in new locations. Get them well out into the room even if it looks odd to you and just listen to the effects and changes. Move you seating location up or back too if you can.

I was wondering about this too...

If you have a sealed-box speaker (i.e. the N2X), does it still need to be 1-2 ft from rear walls?  I can understand why this would be the case for rear-ported.  My setup now sort of requires me to have my speakers close to my rear wall.

The bass output levels with the sealed box speaker will be less effected by the close spacing to the rear wall. However imaging and sound stage depth will be better with them well out into the room regardless of whether or not it has a port.
