Looking for a pair of subs
« on: 12 May 2009, 03:47 am »
I am looking for a pair of subs for my system. They will share equal duty with movies and music so they need to be a good quality sub. Room is 14' x 18' x 8'. I prefer a simple flat black finish and don't want to have to spend a ton of money. I don't want to do a kit, they must be fully completed subs. I also would like to have something with automatic room correction built-in. What brands should I be looking at?

It depends on what "a ton of money" is to you. $500? $5000?

Your choices are very limited right off the bat simply because there aren't that many subwoofers with built-in correction. Names I like for subs are Adire (used only now), Vandersteen, VMPS, Rel, SVS, and Paradigm, among others. As far as I know, none of these offer built-in RC. Some models may be available with equalizers, but I don't consider that the be on the same level as true room correction, such as Audessey, etc.

As always, IMO, YMMV, etc.

As Dan said there aren't a lot of good subs with room correction built in. Have you though about adding something like a Velodyne SMS-1 to a sub of your choice?
While Velodyne does make subs with built in correction, the SMS-1 would open up your options dramatically.

IMO, almost none of the top subs have built in correction. An outboard piece IMO is a better way to go with a couple of good subs.  ACI, Vandersteen, and Seaton Audio come to mind.  Music subs are a whole different animal.

Where can I find info on Seaton audio? A Google search came up empty. My first choice would be ACI, but it looks like both the subs are back ordered in satin black.
