Hi Mike

If I were to use the Symphony Mini DAC-Pre as a computer based sound system, does it mean that I could do without an amplifier but simply use the headphone input to hook up a pair of small speakers. Could I add a USB input for the computer to feed digital media/music? What small speakers would be compatible? How many watts is the Mini DAC-Pre? Could they drive Rogers bookshelf speakers (LS3/5a 15 ohm)?

Nice products!

Best regards
Dennis

Hi Mike

Thanks for the info. I like the modular approach of your products! Can't wait to hear more about the amplifier - hopefully its the same footprint as the mini DAC-Pre.

Good luck with your products!

Best regards
Dennis

We have just released our new Symphony Mini DACPre, which was primarily designed for computer-as-source audiophiles.

I went to the website, this is a very nice looking DAC/preamp and I suspect the sound quality is very good. However, I am disappointed that a device "primarily designed for computer-as-source audiophiles" does not in fact have a standard computer based input. IMO, any device advertising itself as primarily for computer based audio ought to have as a minimum a USB input standard. Having an Ethernet input, even as an option, would really be good. That would allow the unit to be networked.

Without a USB or Ethernet connection this is just another preamp & DAC combo. A pretty nice one to be sure, but except for the marketing there's nothing about the unit itself that tells me it's aimed at the PC audio user.

BTW, your website does not have a USB input listed as an upgrade option.

Dan, from the product webpage regarding the optional USB input:

Quote
You may be wondering why we're not offering USB inputs by default. Simply put, we don't want to contaminate our internal circuitry from a noisy computer PSU and therefore always recommend an external converter. A USB input allows you to plug in your computer and flip through your entire music collection, pick one of the thousands of internet radio stations, watch movies or listen to podcasts. Your computer will treat the Symphony Mini DACPre just like an external USB sound card. Any digital audio data is sent straight to the Symphony Mini DACPre for digital-to-analogue conversion. Digital music can sound truly impressive through the Symphony Mini DACPre. Even compressed MP3 music material encoded with humble bitrates will amaze you with clarity and a full-bodied sound signature. You will certainly agree that sound quality through USB is far superior to any internal computer sound card - regardless of the price.

That's a good step, IMO. It tells potential buyers this really is configured for PC source users.

Next edition - ethernet?
