14B ST dead channel -- any quick check before shipping? (James)

My 14B ST seems to have a dead left channel (apart from an occasional soft, distorted signal).  James, any hints will be appreciated.

I switched the input cables (L for R), and the music still came only from the R side.  I switched the output (speaker) cables, and the music came only from the L speaker.

It seems to me that those tests are definitely diagnostic of a problem in the amp. Have I overlooked anything?

Could this be a user-fixable problem?  The shipping to Vermont is over $100 (most of it declared valuation), so if I can avoid that, I'd like to.

Hi MIke,

Make sure the Balanced (XLR) / Single-ended (RCA) switch on the back is in the proper position.  Is the green light 'on' in the front?

Thanks, James!

I did check the switches, which were both set to the balanced-normal position.  Then, I tried the other (unbalanced) inputs, with both switches moved to that position.  Same symptoms.

Both green lights are on.

It's ironic it should fail now.  Six months ago, some visiting orchestral musicians were enjoying Beethoven, Copland, and Mahler at volumes I had never dreamed of. They, and our other guests, really enjoyed that session, and I got many positive comments on the sound.  Though I was mildly concerned about overstressing the amp or the speakers, no apparent harm occurred.  Delayed reaction?  I'm more inclined to say statistical anomaly.

Any chance of an SST2 upgrade when I send it in?  I know Bryston was thinking about that, but I imagine it has been on the back burner.

Hi Mike,

I will forward this to Mike Pickett at Bryston to see if he has some thoughts. The fact that the light is still on is Odd.

We have looked at the upgrade question and there are simply too many changes to make it cost effective.
