Surrounds for LS's
« on: 11 May 2009, 09:32 pm »
Danny:

I use LS6's for L/C/R in my HT, and Triad Gold surrounds for the side surrounds. They are dipoles, and I think they are a poor choice for surround music, which I listen to often. Unfortunately, at the spot where the side surrounds go, the room is only 10' wide and there are 3 seats there. I chose dipoles because I thought regular speakers might overwhelm that row of seats with surround output. I still wonder about that, but wondered what direct firing speaker would most closely match the LS's? I could build a slanted enclosure that would fit more easily. Any suggestions?

I'd think that any GR Bookshelf with the same tweeter (Neo planar) and woofer should do the trick. Pick up the Neo1 or Neo2x for the surrounds.

There are several problems with side wall surrounds and dipole surrounds.

First, the signal that they get is rear channel information. It is meant to be the things that are behind you.

Secondly, the dipoles scatter the signal sending parts of it to the front of the room and parts to the rear with a null at the listening position in other ranges. From no where in the room can you hear the actually input signal in the way that it was sent to the speaker. All accuracy from anywhere in the room basically goes out the window.

My solution has been the wall mounted omni design. It creates a large non-localized sound field but maintains accuracy to the input signal.

For it to accurately create the sound field as intended, it still needs to be mounted somewhere behind the seating position as it is getting rear channel signals.

So if you have application for it then the A/V-1RS will work nicely and match the LS's very well too.

For it to accurately create the sound field as intended, it still needs to be mounted somewhere behind the seating position as it is getting rear channel signals.

Most processors and AVRs call them surrounds and rear surrounds only for 7.1 setups, as the actual recommended positioning is 100-110 degrees from the listening position for 5.1 and 90-100 degrees for 7.1. It was prologic that specified them as rear surrounds behind the listener. However, multi-channel music specifies a position of 110 degrees (a proper rear speaker) and all speakers equidistant from the listening position.

With soffits, I don't think I have the clearance for the A/V-1RS. Looking around at your DIY kits, I might be able to swing the A/V-O, perhaps even the O-3. Could the A/V-O be modified to use the same tweeter as the LS? That small footprint on the A/V-O would be helpful.

The A/V-O and O-3 will work great as long as you can get them out away from boundary walls. They aren't designed to be against a wall.

I currently do not have plans to do a single woofer version with the Neo tweeter.

No place for them to go away from walls.....DOH!

N3's with the transmission line existing out the front or some of the N1's, N-1X's or N2X's might work out well for you. The N2X is a sealed box and might be the best solution if going almost against a wall.

Do you have any pics or a layout of your room to get a better idea?

I think a single, double or triple woofer design with the neo tweeter on wall to match the LS will be an easy sell especially with AV123 finally starting to roll out some speakers. I know I'd buy 2 pairs aa hint hint!!

I think Danny has said that the Neo does not have the sensitivity to keep up with more than one woofer when placed on the wall (No baffle step compensation needed).

I doubt he would design something to be more complicated than it needs to be for cosmetic reasons.

If we are all lucky maybe someday he will do a Neo onwall, but don't expect it to look much different from the current one.  Why mess with greatness!!!

Yeah part of me says the Neo would be ideal and part of me says the dome is cool because someday I want the New OB speakers...

In the meantime, I'm still working on the core 2 channel rig!!!
