I think you just run Software Update and have it update the OS, right?  No need to erase the current version...

(go to the apple menu at the top-left of the screen, then select Software Update...)

Btw - what is the processor speed on your G4?  I think Leopard 10.5 requires at least 867mhz....

Hello and welcome! As mentioned above, before doing anything, check to see what processor you have (click the apple at the top left and then click on 'About this Mac'). Per Apple, it will not install with anything less than an 867MHz processor (and even then the machine will be quite slow). If you still want to go ahead with the upgrade, backup all your important data and then simply insert the Leopard DVD and perform a clean installation.

My personal experience on my G4s has been less than stellar... i'd recommend 10.4.11 as the newest OS to run on them (don't even think about it if you don't have 1.5 to 2.0 GB of RAM). Any G4 , except possibly the newest ones will also require a DVD reader capable of reading the double layer DVD the install comes on.

I think it will probably be moot anyway, any G4 capable of running on 10.1, is unlikely to meet the minimum requirements for 10.5. If you bought a copy of Leopard to upgrade your OS (since it is the only one you can buy), any dealer worth their salt will install 10.4 for you.

I've got 10.5 on my 1.25 PowerBook with 2G of RAM and it works great as a music serer.  I don't do anything but use this for a music server though.

But there is no way I would try it on my older iBook, or iMac, even though I am only using them for music servers as well.

Peace,

Lee

Hy  . Thanks  indeed  to everyone  unfortunately my G4 is a old computer with a family number M5183  with A 450 mhz CPU  AND 1 G OF RAM  . I want to change the OS10.1 because I would like to install a wifi card just  bought .  Could  another OS version  as 10.3  or 10.4  work  with the cpu aforementioned or must buy  a 900 Mhz cpu and install myself  . as said  earlier  thanks to everyone . :duh:

You want to run 10.4 on that one -- you'll need a PPC install (intel & PPC installs are different) and it should auto-update to 10.4.11. I still have one printshop client that still has a number of these (400 & 450 MHz) running 10.4.11.

I routinely put these together as "internet applicances" for people with no money.

I also figure that the case will make a good home for electronics projects (i have 3 or 4 but haven't proceeded yet)

OSX 10.4 should work fine on your computer:

btw - fwiw, i run OSX 10.5 on a G4 iBook (1Ghz) with 640MB memory, and it seems to work fine...

My advice is to repair disk permissions both prior to and following a OS upgrade.  Otherwise, you should be able to upgrade with the installer without incident.

Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility

Open Disk Utility, select the startup disk (or disk or partition in which you wish to upgrade the OS), select First Aid, then click the Repair Disk Permissions button.  Done.  Run the new operating system's installer, select upgrade, install, restart, then open Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions again.
