I just heard one of the best sounding amps that I have ever heard.

I went down to Gary Dodd's this weekend and heard some new amps.

He has been quiet lately but busy working on new stuff. He had some new single ended mono-blocks that used a single 300B tube in the output. They actually made 20 watts, and they sounded great. They are really a completely different approach to a single ended amp design. I'll let Gary fill you guys in on them if you are interested in those.

The real eye opener though was a new Hybrid amp. It was a solid state amp with a tube front end on it. It was a stereo amp in an all milled Aluminum chassis that weighed in at 95 pounds. It was an all dual mono design that only shared the incoming power cord. I think Gary said it was 200 watts into 8 ohms rated conservatively.

That hybrid sounded incredible. It had everything you'd ever want in an amp. It had none of the typical ill effects of a solid state amp, but with all the dynamics, low distortion, and driving force of a big solid state amp. The critical mid-range was smooth and uncolored. Yet it was very musical just like a good tube amp. Gary may have just hit the right balance. It is really overbuilt as one would expect from Gary's designs, and everything was laid out so that little to no internal wiring was needed. It was all point to point. It also only has one capacitor in the signal path. Changing out that one cap and rolling the tubes would give one the ability to further refine it. I will have to have Gary bring it up here pretty soon so it can be compared to my big blue mono-blocks.

Any of you guys in the Dallas area that are interested in buying you last amplifier should get ahold of this thing and give it a listen. Even if you are not in the Dallas area, it might be worth the trip.

Danny,

Sounds great. Thanks for sharing, I would like to know more... Ballpark price?

Will these replace the big blue amps for you?   :o

You'll have to get with Gary on that. It may also really depend on the finish.

I'll have to see how it compares.

I wonder if he was inspired by me (Larry) sending him my amp (hybrid) to be modified.  After I got my battery pre from him I had to wait a bit for the mono's and he set me up to use my integrated amp as a power amp.  It was a Jolida hybrid.  I'm looking for a pat on the back.   :D

Gary or Danny,

What about this one? -Any news more info forthcoming? Esp. price!?

Sounds like the battery tube amp seems to have stolen the thunder...

Is that one even better than this one?

Gary has been working on a production version of it that will keep the cost down. He is shooting for keeping it around $4,000.

Keep in mind that this is a big bruit of an amp that weighed about 95 pounds.

I was by Gary's a couple of weeks ago and also heard this amp.  He seems to be in a renaissance of creativity now with both the battery amp and this hybrid.  When I saw it, he was still tweaking a few things so I didn't say anything on the Circle, but it sure sounds good.  Gary seems confident that it will compare favorably to the Big Blues.  At the time, it was running a bit hotter than he wanted, but he had made improvements.
I guess that the main thing that I could say is that I never heard the amp at low levels, high levels, or any level.  Just the dynamic music.

As for better, Gary said that the EL84 amp was the best sounding amp that he had ever heard if you have the speaker efficiency, but not everyone can live with 14-15 watts per channel.

  • Some people call me Rob.
14-15 watts!

That's too much.

My SET amp from Bottlehead puts out a whopping 2 watts per channel! aa
