a question about veneer for you woodworkers
« on: 12 May 2009, 03:12 pm »
I just picked up a pair of c-stock av123 x-cs speakers.  The veneer is cracked and split and rough feeling all over the place.  Is it easy to remove the veneer so I could just paint them?  Or would it be better to just fill the seams, sand and paint right over the veneer?

You may be able to fill and sand and veneer over them if the veneer underneath has quit moving around. Maybe you can veneer the front baffle area and paint the rest or something...

Rob, please post a photo.  Whatever caused the problem (insufficient glue, not sealed to keep moisture out, etc), would you like to put in the effort to repair them? What veneer is on those speakers?  If the cracks are not excessive, you could mix up some wood filler tinted to match the predominant color, use a wide putty knife to work the filler into the cracks, rub off the excess rub across the grain, not with the grain), let dry and sand down to your desired smoothness, then finish with your fav finish.  If you don't like the resulting "look" BEFORE applying your finish, you've invested very little besides time and you could then either paint them or apply some new (oh no, here I go again ) paper-backed veneer.
