My source player has a tubed output stage, which I do not want amplified for my pair of Larger subwoofers. The setup I'm working on is the following:
analog output from player to preamplifier
digital output from player to surround processor
pre1-> 40wpc SET amplifier for mids/highs of RM/X
pre2 -> 500wpc digital modulated amplifier for bass RM/X
surround processor crosses over at 50Hz , sub1 and sub2 outputs run to amplifiers to run stereo VMPS Larger Subwoofers. The subwoofers are wired out of phase since they are behind the listener, though spaced equidistant from the listener as the RM/X mains.
More often than not I listen to the RM/X without subwoofers - the exception is when there's pipe organ recordings, or certain DVD's. There's still a lot of fine-tuning and tweaking being done - thankfully I don't notice any latency with the synchronization of the bass between the mains and the subwoofers. The results already are stunning - there are no coherency or localization issues with the bass. I'm still trying to finalize the cutoff frequency and decibal adjustments.
