Mutiple full range speakers
« on: 5 Jul 2009, 10:19 pm »
I have acquired enough Wharfedale 12CS-ALs that I can now try the following. But first I'd appreciate opinions of those experienced with Open Baffle speakers:
For each speaker assembly, I'm thinking of two pairs of these 12 inch fullrange speakers arranged like the Emerald CS2(?) four 15 inch woofers.
What effect would there be using multiple full range speakers over a single FR?

Even though this is not a recommended configuration, because there will all sorts of deep nulls generated above and below the exact mid point between the pairs of drivers (in the vertical plane) you might be surprised at the result.
One of the most arresting examples of imaging I have ever experienced was back in around 1968 and it was created by two pairs of Wharfdale 12" speakers in large reflex boxes - stacked 2 on each side. Janis Joplin was on the turntable and it was as if she had materialized in front of the speakers.
Receiver was a Heathkit tube job of modest power.

The experience is burned into my memory.
