Interesting comment from non-audiophile hearing OB bass for first time

I had a friend, who's a musician, but doesn't really know anything about 'high end' audio. I think he has some consumer level stuff from Best Buy.

Anyway, I had him over to listen to the rig w/ the new GR OB subs. I play a track, and he's like 'wow....that's so huge, and transpararent. When are you gonna turn on the subs?' And I said, 'well they're on now'.

"Really?" "I can't hear them"

Bingo.

"huge and transparent" ? C'mon you've been coaching him in audiophile jargon.
Good stuff. Kinda makes ya' proud I'll bet.

I love it when people "get it".  :thumb:

The good Doctor may have taken the liberty of a little "artistic writing embellishment" so us in the know would understand. Kinda like a translation, you know. The guy probably said something like, "Turn it up some more, I didn't even know they were turned on. Damn dude, that kicks ass. Rock on Brother!!  :guitar:".

It is VERY neat to see the look on the face and hear the reaction of an innocent bystander when they hear it done right.

Yes, I was paraphrasing (I didn't have tape running to record his comments) but he DID use the term "transparent". The guy is a musician, and knows a lot about pro-sound setups and is familiar w/ audio jargon.

It was pretty cool that he had no idea the subs were working. He thought it was all coming from the monitors.

I still wonder if I'm one of the few weirdos running OB bass w/ conventional main speakers. Never got any feedback on previous post about that. I think a sealed monitor like the Merlin is a good match.

I hate to bring up the oft debated term 'break in', but w/ a month or so on the drivers, they seem like they hit harder and play lower before reaching their limit than they did when new. But I'm willing to admit I may have just got the parameters dialed in and adjusted to their unique presentation.

As I've said before. I couldn't be happier w/ the outcome of this experiment. Sure, there are far better rigs out there than mine....more transparent, better dynamics....well, you name it. But there's absolutely nothing WRONG  w/ mine now. It's all 'sins of omission'. I can finally just listen to music.

I won't speak of GR drivers, but yea....there's some break in involved on the unit's I've been playing with. Nothing but good stuff after some run-in.

And yes....You're probably the only weirdo (your words) to run OB bass with conventional mains.

Glad you're having a good time with the sound. That's what it's all about.  8)

Everyone has become too accustomed to boxed bass which is really obtrusive and unpleasant. The characteristic feeling of the way a boxed woofer pressurizes the room is of course very common in amplified live music. With OB this effect disappears and the bass can seem to be missing. If one is used to live unamplified music however the OB bass is a much more realistic reproducer. The bass is there, but you can't feel it in the same (unpleasant) way as you do with a boxed sub.

I can understad if a musician used to PA woofers can get the impression that something is missing.

Then again you could also be suffering from early bass rolloff. Special care must be taken to achieve flat bass response in OB.

Painkiller. He didn't think anything was missing in a negative way! It's just that he was used to hearing thudding, booming subs that you can easily localize. There's no lack of quality bass here.

We always talk about speakers 'disappearing', and these do it well.

Actually you're not the only wierdo with open baffle bass and conventional mains.
I run some css widerange drivers in sealed boxes rolling off at 80hz with
4 x 18" avalanches (actually baffle-less at this point). Love that they don't pressurize the room, sounds quite natural.

Hey!! It's Mr. Creative!
Long time no see dude.
There's a lot more to that picture than just that. That's a cool rig you've got there.  aa

This is the point. Real live music bass does not boom and pump.

What hardware do you use to mount those avalanches?  I still have one new Avalanche in the closet and want to try mounting the same way that you did.  Do you have to weld a bracket to the avalanche for mounting?
