Place to buy speaker building parts?
« on: 4 May 2009, 04:33 pm »
I was looking for a local place to buy speaker building parts that may be cheaper than partsexpress.com.  I am mainly looking for acoustic polyfill, but things like binding terminals and speaker spikes would be good too.  I found walmart's 1" foam in the sewing department works well for lining the speaker boxes.  Would shredded cotton balls work for the acoustic stuffing?  Thanks.

I've shopped at Madisound for a long time, and sometimes they have good deals on various parts.
Check their "Specials" page, and their regular prices too.  www.madisound.com

It's been a lifetime since I've been there, but if you're looking for a local place to "window shop", Gateway Electronics off Page Avenue had LOTS of electronic/electrical goodies.

Also in STL on Page Avenue up north is McMurray Music Center, but my gut feeling is they may have gone out of bidness.

As far as poly stuffing, the material you'd use to stuff blanket/comforters is also in Wallyworlds sewing department. It comes in a bag big enough to hold two or three basketballs.
Not sure about it's acoustic qualities though.  :dunno:

Any fabric & foam store will have Dacron or Kapok, either will work.
Kapok is softer and denser, a little goes a long way in bass tuning, nice stuff to play with.

A search for "Kapok" here on AC will yield a few interesting threads.
