should I be worry about this caps touching?
« on: 12 May 2009, 06:05 am »

I dont like it a bit, should I order a couple of electrolytic caps, leave the leads long, and bend the caps on its side? what do you guys think?

This is how it looks from above

Others may have different opinions on this, however I think you are safe and just fine.

In fact regarding resonance, some manufacturer's will tie or even glue their components together tightly to reduce microphonics.  As long as everything is insulated you are not likely to encounter any issues.

Everything looks tight and proper.

After everything breaks in for a while I would recommend three things to evaluate down the road.

1.  I would ditch that sand resistor faster than a rocket launch.  I really like the 12 watt Mills wire wound.  1.25 ohms is probably all you will need with the current Hammond transformers on the market.  I suspect your H+ is going to be low.

2.  After deciding to go with Sonic Caps, why did you leave the RIAA caps as Panasonic film caps?  Sonic Caps has these too from my memory.  I started my journey with the Panasonic films but then used Multi-Cap and Rel Cap styrenes, and have finally settled on Russian k40Y9 paper in oil caps for these positions.

3.  You might want to try a mono switch.  There are some whacko early stereo recordings that sound a lot more coherent as mono.  It is a good test variable as well when it comes to problem solving down the road.

Excellent work.  I am certain you are going to love the sound.

Thanks tubeforever, oh definitely I am putting a mono switch, that picture is just a dry fitting! what I am not going to use is the led, thanks for all the suggestions, I can try to replace that resistor and down the road I will try better caps for sure, I will post pics when I am done.

I really like the Sonicap version Hagerman's i have heard personally.  They have great silence, dynamics, and sound very natural.

I am certain you will be enjoying some fine music.  Keeping the caps close and tight will not be a problem or an issue.  You might even want to tie them together more closely with either double sided foam tape or hot glue.

Let us know how it sounds when it is done.  I warn you now that your H+ voltage might be as low as 5.76 volts....which is where mine hit.  They call this starving the tube.  Some tube lovers like to tone down the H+ to get more air and detail.  Getting the H+ near 6.15 deepens the bass lines.   6.2 or higher voltage can prematurely wear a tube.

Make sure you address that H+ resistor as soon as you decide on your final rectifier tube.  If you can find a Bendix 6106 I would recommend this rectifier tube.  It has excellent bass, clarity in the mids and highs and does a great job of communicating emotion to the music.

When you select your rectifier tube you might also need to change out a few of the B+ step down resistors so your board hits close to the values Jim set for the circuit.  I had to take the two 10k resistors and use a 9.1K and a 12K resistor in order to drop the voltage enough to nail his circuit.

Cheers!

My output caps can not have the bodies touch anything but I put a bit of tape on the Teflon caps and paste them to the Obbligato's and they are AOK. The Obbligato's have a plastic wrap from the maker.

the Obbligato's at input I had to put a bit of tape on for insurance. Most other caps like yours can mash up against other components with no issue.
