Great news.  What have you been using as a pre prior to to this?

For a moment there, I thought the end of the sentence was going to be, "he's designing an even better pre."

Wishful thinking. Plan on getting a Tempest soon.

I hope you're getting the Extreme monos - my 3.5Rs really started singing once the regular monos were upgraded. HUGE difference on those speakers.

Taht Ack! is getting great reviews, but I'm going to build my own DAC this winter - check out www.dddac.de and see the DDDAC1543 info. I was almost going to order the Ack! when I found this. No output stage - the DAC has enough juice to do it directly!

anyway - you'll love Odyssey amps with maggies, no matter which model. I was very skeptical before upgrading ("how can it get any better?" was my thinking)

MarkgM:

Here's a system description that will answer your question about the older equipment:

http://cgi.audioasylum.com/systems/320.html

Peter:

They're the basic Monos and not the Extremes which I would have loved to get.  But just getting the Tempest and dAck!, paying property taxes, et al plus buying my retirement sled a couple years early put a small damper on the mad money budget -:)  I figure I can always upgrade later.

Here's a pic of da sled -:)  It sits next to a '73 Challenger I had that my youngest son now drives.

The DDAC1543 looks interesting but also appears to still be a work in progress given the recent notes and continuing tweaks.   While I too enjoy wielding a soldering iron, Chris' dAck! simply offered an easier path for me.  Even with my 10+ year old CDP the differences in playback are incredible.

No, silly, that says your peamp is a Tempest.  What did you do before then? Did you have any stereo at all?

I will be curious about the compariosn between the modified Dynacos and the Odysseys.  Interesting amplifers in your list.

Mark,

Under Other Sources in that URL my spares to include equipment just replaced are listed:

{Spare equipment: Kenwood GE-1000 equilizer; JVC QL-7 quartz direct drive turntable; Phase Linear 3000 Series II preamp(modified); Leach Low-TIM line preamplifier]

It was the 3000II that the Tempest replaced -:)

And you ask if I had any stereo at all?  Gesh that URL describes a main system, a home theater system, and a bedroom system.... so what were you reading?   LOL

As for the vintage Dynacos, I always felt the best of their SS breed were the stripped down ST410 (which I have) and the full blown ST416/C100.   When I first auditioned Maggies back in 1975 they were driven by Bryston amps.  The boutique audio salon ownered opined that my ST410 had a very similar sound to those Brystons.  Over the years I had some opportunities to directly compare and concurred.  That said it has grown tired with caps and other components in need of replacing as it's been in constant service since the early-mid '70s.  The Odyssey Monos are in another league all together.  From those whose opinions I respect they trounce the Brystons.  So no question that this will be a major step up in performance in my system.

Sorry, Bob.  You have too much stuff to wonder if you had a stereo b4.  hehe

I'm wondering if you have any specific comments about the tempest, and what it's doing for you.

Another vote from me on the Odyssey vs Bryston comparison.  And all I've had was a Stratos.  You, Mr. Monos, are going to be quite pleased.

Mark,

The 23 year old 3000 series II has been a great performer.  I chose it over the more widely tauted Apt Holman after an extensive A-B comparison.  Over the years I've had to replace a few parts to include the volume pot and did a bit of tweaking.  It reached a point where further repairs/mods didn't pass my sanity check.

After much research I choose the Tempest.  The moving coil stage is a huge step up from that in the old preamp which was no slouch it its own right.  My very low output Denon MCs sound simply great with the Tempest.  Having only one tape loop wasn't an issue as I use a dbx 200X switching unit to handle my 3 tape decks.  So the unit's switching capability fit my needs as does the build and internal component quality.

Everyone uses adjectives to describe audio components and I find that the words sometimes embellish or otherwise miss the mark.  So let's just say that for me the Tempest provides an extremely satisfying sound in concert with the rest of my system.  Most other preamps that I've auditioned over the years in other systems invariably made me comfortable with the performance levels of  my old 3000 II.  Certainly there were some very notable exceptions although far too many (almost all) of these had no phono stages built in.  To my ears the Tempest rivals or exceeds the very best of that exceptionally performing group.  So yes, I'm very very happy with it.   BTW Klaus was right.... I don't miss a balance control.

I will admit that the twin monster dials originally gave cause for pause prior to ordering the unit, but they certainly have grown on me.  As an aside when asking Klaus why he chose that configuration, he shared a comment his wife made about them.... all they need are nipples -:)  He cracks me up and his customer support isn't shabby either!

Is that S2000 the '04 or an older model?
I presume you won't be taking it out in winter?

Jerry,

That's a new 2003 S2K I bought on 26 October.  And no, my Subie Forester provides my winter transportation -:)

Got 'em yesterday and after a misque with a particular wall socket they're up and running.  Oh my they're sweet -:)

But like a viscous cycle I now have another issue.  My left Maggie panel has been exhibiting the infamous buzz at specific low midrange frequencies indicative of delamination between the wires and mylar.  I do not relish the prospects of making the repairs.  Here's a synposis of what is involved:
http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/MUG/messages/55919.html
This was intermittent before seemingly depending on temperature/humidity conditions and is now becoming more pronounced and demanding attention... nothing to do with the amps.

--Bob

Late edit.... fixed the Maggie.  Don't ask -:(  but it wasn't delamination.

I received my Tempest at the end of July, anyway I called Klaus and asked what kind of break-in time I was looking at. Anyway he said about six months, which seemed kind of long (you know how we brats are "I want it now") Anyway after about three weeks on the road I settled in for some serious listening last Thursday evening. All I can say is woah!!!!!!!!!! this thing was great out of the box but now it is remarkable. And you know the best part it's only been 4 1/2 months!!! Looking forward to the new year.

Holler!
