Customization issues with 3B-SST2 Pro?
« on: 15 Apr 2009, 06:34 pm »
Hi James,

I just took delivery on my new 3B-SST2 Pro (ser. no. 3BSST2-001629).

It was ordered with modified gain controls (up to 30 dB of attenuation) for powering the HF horns in a triamped system.

I haven't even hooked it up yet, but I notice that one of the gain controls protrudes from the back plate and one is recessed behind it. One is quite stiff when turned with a jeweller's screwdriver, the other quite loose. And, when positioned at maximum gain, one control is at the 5 o'clock position and the other at the 2 o'clock.

This is quite different from my old 4B-ST. On that amp, the two gain controls are exactly the same as each other in every way.

Am I just being a fussy audiophile or did someone do a less-than-careful mod job on this amp?

Your assessment appreciated.

Thanks very much,

Joel Tatelman.

Hi Joel,

I remember something being said by production about the fact the 2 controls had to be different but I can not remember why - I will check.

Hi Stu;

Can you look into these issue and let me know, please?  Thanks.

The new input boards use a dual pot on ch1 because in bridged mode this pot controls both pwr amp inputs. Has a shaft that does not quite protrude the rear panel and has stiff feel.
Ch2 level control is a single control used only in stereo mode - its shaft protrudes about 1/8" beyond the rear panel with liter feel.

Hi Stu;

Thanks for getting back to me on this.  Is the new dual pot in stock now?  Do the single and dual pot have different rotation points for 'full up', as mentioned by the customer?  Thanx again.

Yes the pots are at right angles to each other - the board would have to change.

James,

Thanks to you, Chris Russell and Stuart Taylor for clarifying matters.

Now I've just got to figure out how to ensure the gain is set the same for each channel. I suppose I'll have to use a mono signal and an SPL meter. Any other suggestions gratefully accepted.

Regards,

Joel.
