placement of black hole pads
« on: 21 Mar 2009, 03:38 pm »
Hi
Could anyone post some photos of where the Black Hole pads are placed on the TVC transformers?  I've searched through the forum but can't find the original post giving a description of placement.  Also, could one use Dynamat pads instead?  I only ask, since I can buy those locally and they're not very costly.  Lastly, would other audio components containing a transformer benefit from using Black Holes, i.e., line amps, CD players, etc.?
Thanks!
Chris

Completely cover the metal on the transformers.  In this case I mounted the transformers to a piece of 1/2" BB plywood and separated the plywood form the enclosure with a piece of BHP with adhesive on both sides of the BHP (contact cement) so no mechanical coupling between box and trannies could happen, all energy must travel through BHP before hitting trannies.  IMO placing BHP under the trannies and then sinking a screw through it going into the wood box below is pointless.  The energy travels right through the screw and into the tranny without being damped.

To Second cporade's Question. Does anyone know if Dynamat is pretty much the same product as The Black hole Pads? I would assume they are very similar. Best Buy has 2 nice sized sheets for about 33 bucks. You would have enough to cover the Transformers, some under the transformers and to cover the top plate (if you want)

Why not just take the metal covering off and remount the transformers on an ebony support system. I have performed this on the TVC ref picked up used.  removed bottom and top metal plates. Made an ebony plinth and set trans on brass then attached to ebony. Made clamps from ebony pencil blanks and used brass screws to clamp down to ebony.   The grounding scheme of the trannie was changed to star ground then to external ground. Changing the attenuator to a dact wrought much better sound. Sorry no pictures cause I'm a pooter person.
the sound now has better tone, bass and mid bass improved dramatically. It retained its clarity and added some needed meat on the bone. Much much better than the original.

Any chance of getting pics, this would be a great project to pass along to other TVC owners

Sorry as I said I am not a computer person. lucky I even typed this. Anyway a 3/8" th. piece of ebony for bottom support. Does not have to be full length [ use short side], screw into bottom of original wood enclosure[ brass screws]. Turn trannie on its side and put four[ one in each corner ] brass rod [ 1/2" dia.] under sitting on ebony plate. Then across the top of the trannie [ on metal ] lay two pencil blanks with holes drilled at each end [ top] to receive brass screws long enough to reach the ebony plate below [ holes pre drilled ] and then tighten nut with lock washer.
The total grounding scheme is a my secret sorry. Remove all buss bars and rewire directly. Do not return grounds to attenuator send to star ground instead. Use better transformer wire [ silver ] to RCAs and back to attenuator.
Last install three Mapleshade brass big feet underneath and sit on SPRUCE not MAPLE plinth 4" thick. another method of mounting the trans is no ebony pencil blanks. Instead use four brass screws with brass washers [ catching the corners and screw through bottom plate and secure with nut and washer ].
The best I could do gents.
