VMPS "Tallboy" Question
« on: 2 Apr 2009, 04:32 pm »
How can I tell if my "Talboy" larger sub has the mega-woofer option? It has the interior and exterior (black fuzzy) sound coatings, but the previous owner (second owner) didn't know anything about the "mega-woofer" option. I'm using a old Hafler DH-500 amp (245 watts/ch./8 ohms) to power it, one channel to each woofer. It's a great old amp. Am I feeding this beast enough power? I've had Velodyne and Defintive Tech. subs, but this one is by far my favorite. Thanks, Bob

Megawoofers weren't available when the Tallboys were in production.  If you want to upgrade you need both the 12" and 15" actives ($125 amd $115, respectively) and the matching PR ($52).  Prices plus shipping.

Likely (as Brian alluded) they are the stock drivers.  The 12" woofer is the easiest to see the difference in that its cone is made from Woven Carbon Fiber, and IS NOT smooth, but has a very tight "woven" appearance.

Hard to say what you might find is "enough power".  I have run my tall boy with everything from 75w to 1000w, and find the more the better.

If your Hafler is 245wpc and you are driving each driver with a single channel (245 x 2) you are likely good for most situations.

Thanks for all your help. There's nothing like hearing from the experts. SO, if I were to upgrade to the mega-woofers and PR, would I hear much difference using the same amp or would I need a lot more power to appreciate the improvement. Thanks again, Bob

Difference should be substantial.

You have lighter cones, stiffer cones, larger magnets, and greater power handling.

On the PR you will also get factory vitrification :thumb:

Your power is good (as long as that amp is still in good shape)

Your improvement will be on ALL fronts.  It will play deeper, it will be more dynamic, it will have greater output, and it will be "faster" and have more detail (once fine tuned and broken in)

If you like what you have now, get ready for MORE of the same at a higher level.

Looking to upgrade my 215's ...where would be the best place to order the megawoofers from?

Thanks
