FS: Dodd Audio "Platinum" Mono 50s - SOLD
« on: 8 May 2009, 06:42 pm »
SOLD

PRICE REDUCED TO $1800.

Rated "8" for age, a beautiful pair of two year old Dodd Mono 50s. I am the original owner.

These are 48 wpc push-pull tube mono-blocks with lacquered curly maple fronts and sides. They use only one NOS RCA/Cetron 829B dual triode (hence the push-pull potential) output tube and two 7044 or 5687 driver tubes per unit. According to Gary Dodd the tubes are driven lightly and should last several years. They are also readily available and inexpensive: the 829Bs and 7044s both go for $15-20. apiece.

The sound, in my estimation, is closest to that of KT66s: resolving, extended and very balanced, with good imaging, soundstaging, and dynamics. In my system, IMO, they've bested a CJ MV60SE, Quad II Classics and a Rogue Stereo 90, and held their own with a CJ LP66S and a Mac 275 V.5.

"Platinum" refers to the upgrading of the amps with 1% non-inductive PRP and Kiwame resistors and Sonicap "Platinum" Teflon capacitors. However, over time, I found the Teflon caps to have an overly smooth, "slippery" sonic signature. I therefore had these caps replaced by Scott Gramlich of SG Custom Sound (a highly competent and well respected technician in Douglaston, NY) with AudioCap PCU film copper foil ones (three .22uf/400VDC caps in each unit) which at $42. each (excluding labor - not included in the "new price" below) were slightly more expensive than the Sonicaps. The results were a more natural tonality with even greater resolution, frequency extension and dynamics. I still have the year old Sonicap Platinums and will include them, for those interested, for an extra $100. (new price is $240./6 from Sonic Craft).

The binding posts are Cardas Tellurium Copper with 4 and 8 ohm taps.  A multi-meter for biasing and three extra NOS 829Bs are included.

ONE CAVEAT: These amps, when switched from "Standby" to "Operate", have around 500 VOLTS running from the wires to the tops of the tubes. THEY ARE NOT AMPS TO BE USED IN A HOUSEHOLD WITH SMALL CHILDREN OR CURIOUS PETS.

The weight is about 45 lbs. for each packed amp and they will be double boxed and insured/shipped from L.I., NY via UPS.  USA only. Local pickup/delivery possible.

NEW PRICE WAS $4200. FINAL REDUCED PRICE $1800. PLUS SHIPPING! Money Order(s) (prefer Postal) or Cash. I have an all positive rating of 327 on A'gon.

For those who must know, I am simplifying my system.

Not stupid. The 829B is a dual triode: two sections in one tube. See here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/schlachet/371670202/in/set-72157594394019745/

I've had trouble posting pics lately; I'll have to figure out why.

Thanks, Robin!
