DVD Analog Outputs Question
« on: 8 Dec 2009, 04:18 am »
When playing DVD movies, what channels are sent to the stereo analog outputs?    Is it just the L/R/C channels?  If so, is the C split equally between L & R?

I think it's going to depend on what you've told your receiver to do.
But generally, the center would be split between the L&R.

Depends on how many analog outputs you have, what player you have, and as stated; how you set it.  Best bet is to read the instructions.

I realize that my question probably sounds rather stupid.  However, I have been struggling with combining HT with 2 channel in a single rig, and am just now coming to realize that I am not really interested in the extra channels (not watching many movies where they have any benefit).  I am considering nixing my HT Pre-Pro (Outlaw 990) from the equation, and just going straight to the stereo Pre Amp (Modwright) via the stereo RCA outputs.  If I do this, I will likely upgrade to the new Oppo BDP-83.

After looking up the Oppo and Outlaw both of which I was unfamiliar... the answer is that if you tell the Oppo to play all DVD's in stereo, then it will either play the stereo mix of the movie or combine all channels, if it's a surround mix into stereo.  the mix will be presented on the analog stereo out in most cases and whichever digital out you specify (toslink, glass optical, HDMI) you may also need to set the Outlaw to see only stereo at it's digital inputs.  Also a good practice is to goto setup on the DVD disk and set to dolby stereo mix.  You can try using the Oppo's analog outs to the outlaw and then try the Oppo's digital outs to the Outlaw and see which you prefer.  My guess is that the Oppo's D to A converters are better than the Outlaws and therefore it will sound better using the analog outs from thr Oppo.  As always YOU MUST READ THE INSTRUCTIONS for proper results

Depending on what type of movies you watch multichannel can be a lot of fun.  There are stereo preamps and integrated amps that feature a "theater bypass", some call it by other names, basically you run your main outputs of the surround processor/receiver into the "theater bypass" input and it allows the home theater system to use the two channel as a slave to power the main front speakers.  Krell called this "Theater Through".  When I converted my stereo rig to tube I ended up with two systems but only had room for one set of main speakers.  So what I do is just run a set of speaker cables from each amp and disconnect/connect depending on which system I want to use.  This isn't a big deal with high quality bananas on the end of the cables.  Just a couple options in case you might want to preserve the multichannel integrity.

Stop!  You can do both.  No need to get rid of anything!  That's why Dan has an HT bypass function on his Modwright preamps.  No need to switch cables, etc.  Just run the Oppo's 2 channel (stereo) dedicated outputs to an input on the Modwright (say input 2).  Then run HDMI or the multichannel Oppo's to the Outlaw.  Now run the front l/r (multichannel preouts) from your Outlaw to the Modwrights HT Bypass input.  When wanting to listen to pure analog stereo bliss pick input 2, and when listening to HT multichannel, pick the HT Bypass input (who's volume control and processing doesn't function..it's just sends signal to your amp...use the volume control on the Outlaw).   For a set of cables you get best of both worlds.
