Grado Stylus Compatibility
« on: 9 Feb 2009, 09:59 pm »
I have a VanAlstine Longhorn Grado cartridge with a slightly curved stylus: this the result of the arm drive motor in my Rabco arm not operating too many times.  The Grado is now in my Technics SL-1200mk2 with KAB arm damper.  Frank VanAlstine tells me that the Grado Prestige Green would be the replacement stylus, but I'm wondering whether the Blue, or even the Gold might be compatible with what was probably a G3E+ body before Frank's mods.  I understand that the higher grades have lower tip mass, and better damping.  I've no idea whether they sound much better.  Comments are solicited.

I have a Grado Model ZF3E+ replacement stylus, and it looks just like all the other stylus models. Maybe it's the same thing for all of them?

You need one drop of 1000 centistroke liquid silicon in the little hole in the stylus assembly housing from where the stylus shaft extends.  Really!

Hey, my tweak is free anyway.  Just send me an absolutely leakproof and crush proof tiny enclosure and $5 for handling and return shipping and I will send you enough silicon to do a dozen stylus assemblies, free of charge.

Regards,

Frank Van Alstine

P.S.  It works great in tone arm bearings too.

Frank,
Where do I send a container? Will a small prescription bottle do?

A small prescription bottle will do, assuming it is leak proof.  The silicon liquid will creep through the smallest openings.
