We looked at the slot loading and decided that what we were doing was the same as the manufacturer. We could not determine any other method of controling wave form other than making the slot the same way, using the same piece of insulation the same way, placing it the same way and securing it the same way.

There is no adjustment means that we could detect that could alter the bass response, other than changing some of the physical characteristics dealing with the slot. It sounds the same as well (bass wise).

I am quite pleased and am looking forward to the weekend when I can get some time with them.

Thanks for the interest.

That's supposedly why Dyna put the material on the outside- they'd add material until it worked right, then tack on the grille material to hold it in place. But then I never took mine apart.

So are you saying once you temper with the foam, you are altering Dyna's design goal? Kind of like taking the bell cover of an output transformer off and chromeplate it?

I've been kicking around the idea of redoing mine, but I thought leaving it alone is more "original".

If you are replacing the same drivers, cabinet volume, stuffing etc, it should work fine. I was just relating Dyna's literature and description of the factory tuning process. If you were to replace the woofer, though, it might not have the exact same characteristics.

db cooper,

I know what your saying. I had the same concerns. We really examined the slot loading and decided that perhaps when they designed the speakers, they played with it. I don't really think they somehow were able to stuff the slot differently with each speaker made. There just doesn't seem to be that level of adjustability. Perhaps this was a tool for marketing more then for speaker designers. We certainly paid lots of attention to the slot detail and copied it very successfully in every way (IMHO) and have not compromised the sound at all. Some one asked if we copied the internal volume and yes we did. The internal damping material fits in the internal volume as the old did. We fastened it the same way. We did turn the input terminals 90 degrees, only because it made more sense.

I am going to listen to these all weekend. It will be fun.

I have 2 pair of the A25XLs. The cabinets are in horrendous condition. What would your friend charge to make 4 more of these gems?

The link that dB Cooper sent show the picture with the tweeter in dead center, which would introduce measureable refraction, I think it'd be better just to make an exact carbon copy of the original.

I thought of putting the tweeter in the center too, but decided not to fool around with the design, other than making them left and right handed, which has been a big improvment. I ran the Dynacos all day yesterday with the U70, powered by my Insight EC preamp with the new chip set. I was very enjoyable.
