College Level Music Appreciation Course?

When I was back there in Seminary School there was a Person there . . . .

Likely many of you appreciate "Soft Parade" by Jim Morrison and the DOORS.

When I was back in College, I took a variety of courses, some because I was interested in them and a couple because they were supposed to be "bunny courses" and pumped up your GPA.

One such course was Music Appreciation 101.  We assembled one morning a week in this huge auditorium with a stage that had two HUGE Altec Lansing VOT's (at the time I had no idea that is what they were  :duh:)

The course professor would have his assistant "Garry" play cut after cut of various Classical works and explain to use the composer and what conductor and orchestra were performing.

He was passionate about his love of music to the point it was hard for me to fall asleep in the class.

Strangely enough this was just before I developed an interest in Audio and at the time didn't even have a stereo or record player.

Must have been "osmosis" at work since I somehow retained much of what this fellow lectured on and even shared his passion for Mussorsky and in particular Night on Bald Mountain and Pictures at an Exhibition.

Anyhow I received a catalog in the mail today which I thought was "junk mail". (and it is) but while in the "Executive Library", I perused it to be very surprised at what might be one of the next big things in education and self education.

Let me back track a second and mention that recently while watching some college football, there was a commercial for a new type of University.  It is entirely "online".  It piqued my interest, since I am far more interested in education now than "back in the day".

In any event, looking through this brochure, I realized that they had some really interesting courses (but this organization used DVD's and CD's to distribute the courses)

Well to make a long story short they had a "Music Appreciation" course, and to anyone who might be interested in enhancing their knowledge, exposure, and understanding of Long Hair Works of the Masters, this might prove to be useful.

And it didn't seem outrageously expensive.

In any event, here is the website

http://www.thegreatcourses.com/storex/courses.aspx?t=&sl=&s=904&fMode=s&sbj=Fine%20Arts%20and%20Music

I was a little disappointed that they didn't have a dedicated Mussorgsky course, but looks like they have a pretty good selection of not just classical but also jazz courses.

The Course in the mailed brochure that caught my attention is a standard Music Appreciation course here:

http://www.thegreatcourses.com/ttcx/CourseDescLong2.aspx?cid=700

$149 for 48 lectures is pretty reasonable I would assume.

So if you are interested in a bit more understanding of Music and don't have time to take night courses, this might be something to consider.

disclaimer:   I have not seen any of these so cannot vouch for their quality or completeness.  I just read the ad and found it interesting.

Consider it an FYI.
