Emerald Physics owners...

Hi everyone, I am pondering purchasing a set of CS2's but I had a couple questions that I hoped you could help me with. First, I realize these were made for 2 channel use but I have only one listening area so I would need them to perform ht duty as well(about 60/40 in favor of music). Does anyone use them in ht applications and if so what are your impressions of them in this role? Also, do you use a phantom center or has anyone found a center that matches the CS2's well.

Second, regarding subs, which subs do you guys use and which crossover points have you found to be most satisfactory? Finally, are there any placement issues specific to using subs with the CS2's(beyond room specific issues)? I would tremendously appreciate any help that you guys could give me on these questions. Thanks for your time.

cmryan21,

I briefly used them in my HT and they were excellent in this capacity.  When I did this, I used a phantom center setting since I only had a pair of CS2's.

As for subs, I would cross them pretty darn low since the CS2's have a lot of bass on their own - certainly no higher than 40Hz.

No major placement issues other than getting them away from the front wall.

George,

Thanks a bunch. I really appreciate the help. By the way, did you replace your CS2's altogether or did you just remove them from your theater area?

I have CS2's in my 2-channel/HT main system.  I have a Dodd battery powered preamp that has a HT bypass so I can have the best of both worlds.  I use a single Tyler Linbrook monitor for the center channel and a pair of Tyler Linbrook monitors for the rear channels.  The center channel blends in well and sounds better than when I tried the CS2 speakers with a phantom center.  I use an ACI Titan sub and I run it line level from the processor and cut it over at 40 Hz through the HT setup.  If I could cross it over at 32 Hz I think that would be perfect.

Greg,

Really appreciate the help. Just to be clear, you use your sub for only ht and not for music right? Sort of off topic, but how are you liking your Dodd preamp? I was looking at one last month but didn't pull the trigger. Thanks again for the info.

I only use my sub for HT since the CS2s produce plenty of bass when I listen to them in 2-channel mode.

I absolutely love the Dodd and have no desire to get a different preamp.  It is very transparent and full range, and responds well to tube rolling.  Because it uses only half of each tube, it is cost effective for trying some more high end tubes.  After trying many different tubes I found that I like the 1965 USA Amperex USN-CEP white label 7308 tubes the best (even better than 1959 Amperex D-getter 6922 tubes).
