I have for sale one pair of Quad 988 full range electrostatic speakers, HotRod version. All black and complete with the original boxes and packing inserts to ship, unfortunately missing the spikes.
HotRod version consists of
Eichmann CablePod binding posts installed and
18GA 5N silver solid-core wire between said posts and the board. Also the 200 uF electrolytic cap that
*all* music signal passes through has been replaced with a bank of
high quality film-n-foil caps that total 208 uF and also
connected via silver wire.
I purchased these from
Echo Audio in Portland, OR and they came with their basic guarantee so I knew they would be reliable and I have had no problems whatsoever. While I have not heard stock 988’s the folks at Echo assured me
these are a significant improvement. To my ears they sound wonderful, and like all the reviews say, they perform best if playing small-group jazz or chamber music, solo instrument and/or voice, generally intimate forms of music. They are just too dynamically limited to satisfy (MY needs) in reproducing large scale works whether symphonic, big-band jazz, or rock. However,
mated to tubes or Class A solid state and within their capabilities I have not had another speaker that sounds so life-like in the midrange in my home. Bass is excellent in my opinion and they easily achieved response in the low 40’s in my room. The treble is so sweet, bells, chimes, and triangles have excellent presence and timber giving them their feeling of real substance.
Perfectly balanced top to bottom probably due to not having a crossover.
They are located in 99352 and can be auditioned. Also I am willing to deliver them (pre-paid) to the Vancouver/Portland, Seattle/Tacoma, or Spokane metropolitan areas. As I have the original boxes they may be shipped but as it must be in the upright position (speaker on its side in the box) so it would have to be by freight. I can build a sturdy crate but would require the buyer to pay for the materials and the shipping fees, of course.
