MC Cartridges & BP26 MM/MC
« on: 7 Feb 2009, 02:54 pm »
Does anyone know what ohmic value of MC Cartridge will work with a BP26 MM/MC with a turntable that doesn't have the amplification built into it? Or will any MC Cartridge work with the BP26 MM/MC

Hi Barry,

There are 2 versions of the MC phono stage available. The 'standard' version which has 22.5 dB of Gain and the 'special order' version which has 16.5 dB of gain.  The Standard version is for use with MC cartridges having an output impedance of between 2 ohms and 35 ohms (most of the MC's fall within this range). The special order version is for cartridges at 35 ohms and above (ex: Denon 103D).

James,

the manual of the BP 1.5 says the following:

MM has 35 or 41 db of gain (internally changeable). factory set is 35 db.
MC has 51.5, 57.5 or 63.5 db of gain. factory set is 57.5 db.

compared to the  BP1.5  the  BP26 has a much lower gain (22.5 or 16.5 as you explained) for MC systems. why?

Hi Alex,

The 22.5 and the 16.5 dB is 'JUST' the MC Transformers- it does not included the MM Phono Gain or the Preamp Gain.

James I have a 2 Year old BP26 MM/MC would any one of these for instance "http://www.needledoctor.com/Ortofon-Salsa-Low-Output-MC-Phono-Cartridge?sc=2&category=402" work with my Pre and a TT that doesn't have any gain or support for a MC. Also with Ohmic Value would I look at when comparing manufacture to manufacture MC, is it the Internal Impedance, DC Resistance or the Recommended load impedance

Hi bacmsl,

Looking at the specs either of these 3 cartridges would work with the BP26MC standard version and a TT with no gain.

The internal impedance and recommended load impedances are the specs your most concerned with.
