So my vote goes to the Japanese EMI pressing of the Abbey Road cd.  I still own it and prefer it's crazy warmth to anything else out there.     :D

That's the one I have, and voted similarly. What I can't understand is why there is no love for Sgt. Pepper. That's #2 on my list.

Anyway, as a purest I can't vote Beatles 1 (sorry George...Zybar, not Harrison); it's no-noised to death.  So my vote goes to the Japanese EMI pressing of the Abbey Road cd.  I still own it and prefer it's crazy warmth to anything else out there.  The remastered YSS (Yellow Submarine Songtrack, also not listed) is very kewl, though...and not purist at all.   :D

Ted,

I agree with you on the sonics front; I simply wanted to get as many Beatles songs as possible if I was picking a single cd.  In this quantity was more important that ultimate quality.

Well, I voted for Rubber Soul, because we could only pick one.  But if I'd been able to pick my Top Five, it would have been the great run starting with Hard Day's Night and ending with Revolver (Hard Day's Night, Beatles for Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver).  That's when they were at their peak, producing one outstanding 3 minute song after another.

Dave

I agree wholeheartedly . Their later albums was more sophisticated but also more self conscious . I tend to to like their early music better . I chose A Hard Day's Night for personal reasons . It was at a time in my young and naive life when I was first bitten by puppy love and the ballads If I Fell & And I Love Her really struck a chord then . When I play the cd now however I recognize how great all the songs are . I always thought too that Beatles For Sale was an underrated record especially the joyous Eight Days A Week and What You're Doing .

Abbey Road but I agree with SATFRAT - Let it be has a very cool groove to it.  I saw McCartney in concert a few years a go, prior to him coming on stage he showed film clips of his life on screens above the stage and during the Concert he played one song (never recorded) that he said he remembered sitting in Georges house and writing at a very young age.  The show was one of the best Ive seen - A great experience - and really made me realize what an amazing life and career he has had - and He's getting married again!  Cheers to Paul!

Coincidentally, it was 40 years ago today that the boys gave their last public performance, "The Rooftop Concert".

A local station has a two hour eclectic rock program every Sat nite (songs listed at myspace/the_set_list) and they played What You're Doing. I had forgotten it to the point where I almost felt as if I was hearing it for the first time. What a great song!!!!!

It amazes me how tight they were given how they never played in public and were under pretty stressful circumstances there. For a while I was wondering whether their songs were dubbed in and the video was just edited to fit, but apparently it was real. Amazing talents.

I think I Dig A Pony was a better song than I realized at the time. Paul's bass work was impressive, and so was John's guitar work.
