Atma-Sphere Amp Owners - Do you use an autoformer?
« on: 21 Oct 2010, 08:56 pm »
To the Atma-Sphere owners,

I am about to acquire a pair of M-60s (upgraded from m-50s) and would like to know how many of you are using Zero Autoformers or any other impedance matching device?

Please list the model of Atma-Sphere amp, speaker make and model, and whether you are or are not using a zero or something else.

Thanx,
Jake
PS - I split this out into its own thread so as to not hijack Gopher's thread on balanced vs. SE preamps used with Atma-Sphere amps.
mgalusha gave me a response but I need more.

Not using Speltz Zeroes currently with my MA-1's driving Vandersteen 5A's.

I have used them in the past with good success (M-60's with Emerald Physics CS 2's, Coincident Super Conquests, or Gallo Nucleus), but thought my current system sounded better without them.

Hi jtwrace,

Yeah, if you're talking about these http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=85880.0then you are correct.  He got my Quad 988s and I got the M-60s.  I'm excited to try OTL because I have a pair of Audio Nirvana Super Cast 12" fullrange drivers and I want to try them mounted open-baffle combined with Danny Ritchie's OB subs in a "W" frame ala the V1/V2 just voiced a bit differently by using a different driver.  If I cut everything off below 80 Hz then the M-60s will see a load of 8.6 to 12 ohms.  Might be kinda interesting, eh?

We'll see.  And thanks!

Thanks for chiming in, zybar!  I was most curious as to whether or not you were using them with your Vandy 5As!  If I could ask fo a bit more info, how do you have the speakers wired to the amps?  Are you using the Vandersteen crossover boxes?  If so are they passive or active?  The big questions is what kind of load do they present to the amps?

Well, I guess I just have to try it and see if they will work without zeroes on my Genesis speakers.

Jake, the V1 uses an H-frame. If you really want a W-frame, I've got an unbuilt flatpack for a pair of W-frame subs I can sell you dirt cheap. (I orded an H-frame, and this was what was sent)

Yes, I use the Vandersteen high pass filters between the preamp and amp.  This means the MA-1's don't see much below 120Hz.

I believe the amps see a 4 ohm load with the 5A's.  I know that it should sound better with the Speltz Zeroes in play, but it didn't.

Thinking about it I used my Zero's with my old OTL and didn't try them with the M-60's. Guess I've got some listening/testing to do. :)

I should have kept my ZEROs, but when someone came over to hear my speakers, he insisted on buying my entire system.  That was before I moved back to BC.

On a speaker like that you won't need the ZEROs. With M-60s, if the load is getting below about 5 ohms or so, then ZEROs might be a good idea. The M-60 is fine with most 8 ohm speakers, if they really are 8 ohms.

So the GedLee Abbey should be fine then.  Right?

From his site: Impedance: 8 Ohms above 100 Hz.

Understood, Atma-Sphere, I am just querying other owners for what speakers they are using with their Atma amps and whether ZEROs are being used or not.  This all in relation to my running my Genesis on the M-60s.  It appears that trying it out is the best way to find out if they will match up.

I've tried measuring the DCR of the Genesis but due to the fact that the input is to the built-in sub amps so I get a strange reading.  My meter starts at about 10 or 12 ohms and slowly climbs to ~56 ohms.  Weird.

So I'll just try it and if it's a no-go then I'll look to try ZEROs down the road but focus on an OB project to run with the amps.

I believe Paul Speltz has a 30 day money back satisfaction guarantee.  From what I recall, they didn't require any break in.  The difference in my system was immediate and very obvious.
