SOLD:GR Reseach A/V-3 Neo kits - Reduced
« on: 8 Jan 2009, 12:30 am »
I had posted this in the Trading Post earlier but wanted to post it here after I got Danny's permission.

I purchased these kits about this time last year from Danny. Being that work/family commitments have prevented me from finishing them and an un-expected house purchase has got me scrounging for cash I have decided to sell them. I do not have any enclosures for them since I never made it past the test enclosure stage and the pair of A/V-3 Neo's that have been used have very little play time on them. If someone was looking for a completed set they could use the Parts Express cabinets. I would even be willing to cut the baffles if they needed. An extra set of baffles could be drop shipped to me and then set with the drivers after purchase.

Here are the details:
(3) GR-Research A/V-3neo kits, this is a MTM speaker similar to the A/V-3S but uses the BG Neo 3 in place of the GR tweeter. Each kit includes (2) Gr-Research M130/16 woofers, (1) Neo 3 planar tweeter, assembled crossovers, (1) terminal cup, and instructions. Two of these kits have been assembled and used for about a month, the other one has assembled crossovers but has never been hooked up. The crossovers also include the Sonicap upgrade. I am selling these for $165 each plus shipping, retail is $215. If someone wants all three I will let them go for $450 and throw in three Infinity OVTR1 amplifiers.
Details are not on the GR-Reseach website but you can look at the A/V-3S as a comparison.

Thanks to Danny for letting me post this here.

Sorry for the threadjack, but Danny, if you're out there, how does this A/V-3 neo compare to the new Neo-X kits with the -X drivers and the PDR tweeter?  I read the info linked off the driver pages, but how does that relate in the real world with your crossovers?  Thanks!

The A/V-3 Neo kit that he has is an earlier version that I designed that uses the standard Neo-3 pdr tweeter. It sounds great.

At the ime I didn't release it as a kit because RAW Acoustics was wanting to launch a kit using my M-130/16 woofers in an MTM with their ribbon tweeter.

The A/V-3 Neo will match well with the newer Neo series kits.

I am going to release a new version of this speaker as a kit but using the newer deep back cup version of that tweeter just like the other Neo series speakers.

Thanks for answering, Danny!  Am I reading correctly in the description of the old vs. new version of the tweeter that the deep back cup helps smooth the output of the tweeter in its lower frequency range or is there something else I'm missing?

. . . on another tangent, I was reading the OB-5 center thread, and read that this A/V-3 neo "kit" is basically just the top part of a OB-5/7 in a sealed box rather than OB. . . does it then follow that one could add the bass modules of either the OB-5/7 to this kit (plus whatever additional crossover parts are needed for the bass section) to make basically a big, sealed, high-powered floor stander?  Just thinking out loud. . .

Thanks!

you are correct. My original plans in discussion with Danny was to use these with the OB-7 bass section powered by a plate amp.

I guess I was wondering more if the bass module could be reintegrated into the crossover and run passively with the rest of the speaker. . . again, basically a completely sealed box version of the OB-7 (the SB-7?  :green:)

Thanks for the reply! :)

The crossover used in the upper section of the OB-5 and OB-7 are going to be completely different.

You could add a separate power lower section to this model and I have had a guy or two do this with their A/V-3S. But if it were me, I think I would use the transmission line enclosure and then just add a direct servo sub.

. . .

Thanks for the input again, Danny!  I guess I was just thinking (hoping) that I could increase the driver area (ala the OB-7) to give me a bit more "slam" in the lower midrange when used for HT and give me some more placement options closer to my walls in having a sealed speaker.  Right now, I'm running a pair of Strata Minis up front with the powered woofers turned off and crossed at 80Hz.  They do a fine job, and I like the sound very much (which is why I've been looking into your designs with the Neo tweeters), but I did also very much like the impact I got from some other speakers I've had up front. . . and I really want to finally get a center channel speaker again. . . I guess I'm just trying to have my cake. . . Maybe I should go back to fiddling with trying to get the Mini woofers dialed in with the subs. . .

Oh, and I've got a pair of Brian's 12" servo subs with your drivers in them. :D  I like them very much, and my only decision now is whether to start putting money in the piggy bank to buy a couple more of them, or sell them and build up a pair of 2-driver cabinets with a plate amp each (I"m assuming that the pre-built subs use the 4-ohm version of the driver as that's the load the amp likes best).  ARGH!  This whole thing started with my trying to cut DOWN the number of amps in my setup. . . pushing two buttons to get everything going has been nice for a change. . . ;)

The A/V-1 kits are sold but I still have the A/V-3 Neo kits. If someone wants all three I will sell them as a package for $450 and throw in three of the Infinity OVTR-1 plate amps so they can be used with a powered lowend.
For information on the plate amps see:

I could not resist any longer and pulled the trigger on these this morning.

Can't wait to figure out what I am going to do with them and explain to my wife why I needed these!   aa
