Help Identifying Omega Speakers
« on: 22 Jan 2009, 12:12 am »
Hi folks,

I am attending a local auction where some Omega speakers will be sold.  Assuming they are legit, two sets are Compact Hemps and one pair I have not identified.

Are these compacts the latest version?  The drivers are identical in the two pairs - the drivers on the maple pair look black due to poor white balance in the shot.

Is the "wool" around the whizzer normal?

Finally, what is the third pair?

If successful I likely will sell one pair here.

Thanks,

Jerry

The first speaker is from before my time with Omega.

The Compact Hemps must be the older version (i.e. not the current driver). You can tell this by looking at the size of the wizzer compared to the current Compact Hemps -- [scroll to bottom of page] -- http://www.omegaloudspeakers.com/products/specialapps#compact

Now that Louis has gone heavily into Alnicos, he might be willing to give you a good deal for a set or two of the current drivers used in Compact Hemps. Give him a call.

Compact Hemps are still a current product. And they sound great if you back them with good equipment. Best avoid a bright amp or bright source.

Used Compact Hemps with the current drivers show up on A'gon. I'm thinking the prices have been in the $700 - $800 pr. range, but don't hold me to that. Take the price for a set of new drivers from Louis and figure that into your auction bid. If no one else really understands what they are bidding on, you might be able to get a great deal.

Hopefully others will weigh in so you have a broader set of opinions then just mine to help with your decision.

Good luck. Kent

To your question re. wool, the current Compact Hemp driver does not have wool around the wizzer. I'm pretty sure it has a felt ring around the outside of the 8" driver.

Thanks for the help.  I was too cheap at the auction to get them.

Jerry,

Where was the auction ?

What was the final bid on the speakers ?

Just curious.
