Need Feedback!
« on: 12 Jan 2009, 05:44 am »
Hi, I need some feedback. My room is 17 1/2' x 15' x 8'. My room is fairly well treated with acoustic foam & asc bass traps in the corners. My problem is a pressure on my ears when I get to close to the rear wall while listening. I believe the problem is the back wall. My guess is that the bass at say around 100hz on down is being excited to much by this wall. I feel if I buy some major bass traps to put on the back wall will hopefully stop this problem, but these cost a pretty penny & I would like to be sure this will stop the pressure problem on my ear drum. This problem came to light when I bought the Wilson Sophia. They want you to be a certain distance from the speaker. I use to do all of my listening in the nearfeild position & I never had this problem before, but I loose to much information doing this with the Wilsons. Has anybody else ever had this problem before? Will bass traps really help or solve this problem?  Is there anything else that could cause this?    Thanks,   Bill

You'll probably get a bit more feedback if you post this a little further down the page in the Acoustics Circle.  Welcome to AC!

Another option would be to move the speakers.
That will move the position of the node you're experiencing.

You are sitting in a bass node. I would move the chair forward from the wall in 1 foot increments until you are out of the bass node. Then adjust toe if necessary. Wilsons can play very wide. Test for yourself with Realtraps test CD.  Then test again moving forward two feet. You don't want that closeup rear reflection in the mids/highs anyway. Absorbing the rear wall close to your head with a panel will not stop the node at that freq. and will ruin the feeling of space behind you.  More bass trapping in corners might improve the node, but broadband trapping might not be focused enough if you have a whopper. Use modecalc to estimate what's going on in your rectangular room.

If you bought the Sophias new, get the dealer back to adjust the positions until you're happy.  Rules are only meant to guide. If the dealer put you a foot from the back wall sitting in a bass peak, he needs to learn a few more rules.
