Online/hosted productivity applications
« on: 27 Dec 2008, 08:23 am »
I'm looking into online/hosted applications, in order to avoid having to sync multiple computers (or worse, email files to myself  :duh: :duh: :duh:). So, I thought maybe a sticky thread on this where people could post online applications that they know about (or even better, have used).

Includes a word processor, spreadsheet, etc. It's more fully featured than I expected, to be honest...! I was able to import a document generated in MS Word and then edit it; I also created a spreadsheet and published it as a web page. Pretty impressive. I'm still looking for something lighter weight for note-taking and personal organization.

Edit: additional names of possibly similar products: zoho, ajaxWrite, thinkFree, Writely, Num Sum, iNetWord.

I've been playing with this application for a couple of hours, and it's pretty neat. At first it seems too simple to be useful, but after a while I'm getting into the swing of it. Basically, you can set up pages (only 2 on the free account), and on each you can create lists, notes, and "writeboards" (notes with formatting). You can publish pages individually if you want others to see them, and each page has an email address that you can use to send todo list items or notes to.

That's about it really. I'm actually finding it about the right level of complexity (simplicity) and structure (lack of) for what I need. I may end up getting a paid account if it's still doing it for me in a few days.

Good links - thanks John. Google's Docs look interesting - that may be the final step needed for me to liberate one laptop of MS Office  :thumb:

Cool, let me know how you go with that :)

I've started using an offline application that mimics Backpack, and can be synced up to it at any time. For one reason, Backpack can be a bit slow to use at times with all the round-tripping, and also it means that I can turn off the wireless modem sometimes - only because it seems to use a lot of power and practically halves battery life :(

Anyway here it is:
