Lots of questions starting with enough power?
« on: 2 Jan 2009, 03:58 am »
My system currently consists of a B100 SST integrated with DAC driving Totem Model 1 Signatures.  I use a Rotel RCD991 with as a source/transport as I use the DAC in the Bryston.  This Rotel has adjustable dither settings.  My room is approx. 9 x 11 with 9' ceilings.

1.  Does the Bryston integrated have enough power to drive the 4 ohm Totem's which are supposedly very inefficient speakers.  I've been told the power is not sufficient for the next level up, Mani 2 sig's
2.  I've read all the great reviews about the new Bryston cd player.  I have not had a chance to demo one in my system.  Will there be much of a difference given that I am already using a Bryston DAC? i.e. would the money be better spent in upgrading speakers, better transport, cables, etc...
3.  The current Rotel has adjustable dither, does this do anything if I am only using it as a transport?
4.  Does anyone have any recommendations for similar sized stand mount speakers that may be a better match with the Bryston gear?

Sorry if the questions seemed scattered but I want to get as much input as possible so I can make the right decisions.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.  Just my opinion.

1.  Your room is not large.  According to this: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_4/totem-acoustics-signature-speakers-10-2001.html
the efficiency I would call average.  Since your room is not large, unless you like to listen at very extreme listening levels, I'd guess the 180W continuous capabilities are more than adequate.
2.  I'd guess not and you may want to consider other upgrades, depending on your tastes and preferences - e.g. sub?
3.  I could be wrong but I'd guess no.  You are playing with the digital noise floor by adjusting it and I'd think that would be integrated into the DACs of the Rotel which are not being used.
4.  I'd concentrate on your preferences and if you consider changing, either get an in-home audition or drag the DAC, amp and speakers to a place you could listen and make comparisons.

I would just throw in an idea. What you might look into is room eq. If you rip all your cd´s in lossless on a computer you can control everything wirelessly, and you can add room correction to the computer.
When you listen to music you are not only listening to your speakers, you are listening to an interaction between room and speakers, and measuring a good sounding system can be a big surprise. Even though speakers has specs at maybe +-1 db in a certain range you may measure for instance +- 8 db in a room, depending on the setup.
Inguz room correction for the Squeezebox 3 is new to me, but after one measurement I now measure, (except for a 50 hz problem I am trying to solve) +- 1 db from 25-800 hz. (Havent measured or corrected anything over that frequency)

Since you have the B100 I urge you to take a look at the review in Stereophile.

Thanks for the input.

Wow, squeezebox's and room corrections.  somewhat familiar with the squeezebox, but know nothing about room corrections done on a computer.  I will look into this.

Jethro, I am using a BP25 with DAC option, and a Linn Ikemi CD player.

I have moved them forward and have yielded some amazing results. These speakers are
Amazing. Effortless, meaty and full sounding.
I am very happy with them.

This if you dont use Squeezebox (but I have a feeling it might be an option also for Squeezecenter in the near future): http://www.juicehifi.com/index.html
