Mix and match SST with SST2 for home theater
« on: 20 Dec 2008, 06:46 pm »
Hi All (James),

i am planning for a while to get on to the Bryston family to drive my HT speakers (Focal electra BE, 1027, center and surrounds). Due to budget reasons, i am thinking of 9B SST2 and say 3B SST. Most likely 3B SST from Audiogon and 9B SST2 from a dealer. I will be driving one pair of the surrounds through 3B SST. And ofcourse, Integra processor until the SP3 comes out..

Do you think i am doing a ok thinkg (from technology and other technical issues which i am not an expert). Your inputs as ever are greatly appreciated..

Thank you..
Cm.

Hi CM,

Is this system mainly for listening to Surround or Stereo as well?

Hi James,

primarily its for surrounds. But in future, would like to keep the Stereo option open. Thankx.

Hi James,

do you think its a good idea to drive my stereo (in future) with 9B SST2 or do you suggest to dedicate a 4B SST or 3B SST instead. Thankx.

Hi CM,

I usually recommend a separate stereo amp only if you do a lot of Stereo listening.  In Stereo your asking 2 speakers to fill the room with X amount of 'acoustic watts' whereas in Surround you have 5-7 speakers to fill that same space. So typically the stereo should have more power (I usually recommend 2X the power) for the two speakers than the Surround amp would have. The size of your main left/right speakers relative to your Surrounds also plays a roll in this decision of course.

Also when your listening to Stereo you only have to power up the stereo amp.
