High Efficiency Systems
« on: 17 Dec 2008, 03:52 pm »
I recently was sent an Altec (Great Plains Audio) 604-8H-MK3 for a custom crossover design. It was a fun project and I'm here to offer my services for anyone looking to upgrade.  :thumb:

How efficient are you talking?
I have 94-95db speakers now and would want more efficiency if I were to move to a different speaker.
I have ~6 watt SEP amp that like 8ohm loads.

Ever think about doing stuff with compression drivers? EDIT: oh i just googled great plains audio.
I can't do an array.

Keep in mind that most manufacturers are, um, let's say "optimistic" about efficiency / sensitivity ratings. It's not unusual to see a rating that's 3-4db (or more) above the actual sensitivity. I don't fudge on our specs; in fact, customers often note how our designs exceed their previous speakers and expectations. I'll post the sensitivity on the design when I get a chance.

How would you contrast the sonics and efficiency (tube friendliness) vs. your Tanzinate Accuton Accuton RAAL unit?

The Altec is more SET-friendly, has greater output capability, and is much higher in sensitivity. In all the other areas (assuming a solid-state or push-pull tube amp) the 3-way is far superior (detail, imaging, wide dispersion, tonality).
