If I did not have kids, I would have jumped on this deal when I saw it earlier today.  But, alas my time is finite as well as my game buying dollars.  So the 360 is my only console.  Plus, I just bought a $50 HD dvd player, which I bought because I have a small library.  The PS3 is arguably the most dynamic br out now.  I will have to wait on the whole BR until further liquidity, hopefully just about the time the Oppo player comes out.
So, if you have a need for a particular Sony only game, and have a BR library, this is a no brainer.  I don't read into the console wars anymore price cuts for quite some time.
Have fun!

The PS3 is a great blu-ray and DVD player, and the newer ones are much quieter (in terms of fan noise than the previous models). Make sure you get the optional DVD remote -- it makes it much easier to watch movies than using the game controller.

How do you actually get this deal?  I have a PS3 already (and love it), but a friend of mine would like to buy one and is looking for a good deal.

thanks!

Well I am wavering...but my friend wants it I don't get it.

You get this deal by applying for the Sony Visa Platinum card and you buy the PS3 80GB (without hardware PS2 compatibilty, 2 HDMI) for $399.

Then you get a $150 credit on your card statement. Plus I think you have several months interest free to pay it off.

My big question, before I could look into it, was would my Sony monster CRT KV-40XBR800 with only DVI, component, firewire, SVS etc, be able to do HDCP which is required by the Blu-Ray format    Something that you tend to forget. But realize this - if you buy a Blu-Ray player to watch these spectacular Blu-Ray movies, you need an expensive TV that has HDCP in the form of a computer and cabling built in! Now I see in a practical way why Sony is selling these PS3s at a loss! If they do not sell an expensive TV at least they get licensing fees (which Apple and MS do not want to pay, among many other companies).

But I checked and my Sony seems to have the capability since way back in 2002, albeit via DVI, and at only 1080i!

Quote
Two broadband component-video inputs that will accommodate 480p and 1080i, as well as a DVI input that's compatible with Hollywood-sanctioned HDCP copy protection, comprise the set's most important video inputs. There are also three sets of A/V inputs, two of which have S-Video jacks; a set of monitor outputs for composite video only; and two RF inputs for cable TV and antenna hookups. Front-panel A/V inputs with S-Video are located behind a flip-down door that sits beneath the center of the screen.

The question is will it work via DVI with a PS3 for Blu-Ray movies?

And the answer seems to be yes -

I had to review...DVI = HDMI 1.1 as far as the video signal, if the DVI is HDCP compliant

HDMI 1.1 carries the audio signal which DVI does not have
HDMI 1.3 has the advanced audio capabilities as well

Since my TV does 1080i but not 1080p I may do just as well with Component (analog) but I think DVI would be the best.

First I will rent a Blu-Ray from the local video store and make sure it really works with my KV-40XBR800, DVI cable, and my Outlaw 950 using optical out

Then if not what I want I will sell it to my friend...

Or...maybe I will buy a 52" Bravia   :banghead:  :deadhorse: :slap:

:o Oh dude...... I wish I'd have known that......
The last time I checked, you can rent video game consoles from places like BlockBuster.
You could have just rented one for the weekend before a huge financial commitment.  :?
