Icon Sub-1 ? (the official name is now NuForce W-1)
« on: 13 Nov 2008, 12:29 pm »
What do you think? List price $249. 100W very small sub for Icon system.
Not cheap, but matching design. The legs (silver color section) will be offered in the same 4 Icon colors.

We haven't decided to release it yet. Will probably offer discount for people who are buying the whole set or have already purchased Icon and S-1.

Looks interesting. What is the range of the system as a whole now.

I enjoy my Icons very much, but I am skeptical of small subs. I have yet to hear a small sub produce bass notes that sounded true, i.e. without hollowness or coloration. It seems to me that the laws of physics dictate large drivers and powerful amplifiers for low frequencies to be reproduced faithfully.

Also, the legs imply a downward firing sub, correct? Doesn't gravity help with the downward excursion and hinder the upward excursion of the driver? Does this affect the sound? And wouldn't the driver, in time, suffer from gravity sag?

If you can pull it off, all power to you. I certainly enjoy all my Nuforce equipment: the Ikons, the Nuforce integrated, and the earspeakers with mic. Surprise me!

Looks like we listed everything as $249.  :)
So Icon + S-1 + Sub-1 = $249 x 3
Not too bad for a high quality system.
We are not sure how much discount we can offer for the total system, since we already priced each individual component with low margin.

We have yet figure out the final production cost of Sub-1.

How long before the $250 Icon CDP?

Let's not forget the finishing touch, Icon cables.  :)

We are taking the subwoofer into production, current estimate is shipping before end of January 2009.
NuForce W-1 will be offered in 4 different color legs (see the image in this topic): silver, black, red, or blue

Looks like a smart design. When I reviewed the Icon-1 and S-1 for Techgage, a lack of low end was my largest complaint, but I'm glad to see that this is being addressed.

Will this subwoofer simply plug into the 'line-out' port on the back of the Icon? If so, will we be able to daisy-chain additional line-level devices from the sub as well, or would we need a Y-splitter cable? And what size is the driver? I await more photos.

Cheers!

The Nuforce team designed the W-1, it has our own proprietary 5" woofer.   The crossover is full-featured, unlike most $200-300 subwoofer, W-1 has adjustable crossover frequency, output level, and variable phase.  It features both 3.5mm input and RCA input.  The RCA input is particularly suitable to run 2 W-1 in stereo.  There will be an extra RCA pass-through on W-1 for daisy-chaining multiple W-1.

W-1 features universal worldwide AC voltage support (SMPS) and 50W switching amplifier.
