MF7 owners: amplification? impressions?
« on: 4 Dec 2008, 10:52 pm »

Would any MF7 owners be willing to say what amplifier's you've tried using them with, and how successful you thought they were? Is anybody using tubes?

More generally, I'm very interested in how you like your MF7s, especially if you listen to acoustic jazz or classical recordings. How ruthless are the MF7s on historical recordings?

Finally, is anybody using them in a small room?

(I've read the review in Affordable$$Audio.)

Thanks!

I listen to them in a room that is 14x17x10 (vaulted ceilings) which is on the smallish side. It's a 3rd floor apartment. I have them stand mounted around 12" from the wall as part of a 4.0 system (I ordered a pair of MF7s, surrounds from another company, still looking to get a matching center MF7). I don't have an amp - I'm powering them with a Harman-Kardon AVR-247 receiver (50wpc). I love them. They sound great on mp3s and poorly recorded rock records. I don't have any vinyl. I've tried them on rock, rap, movies, a bit of classical, they sound great on everything. They have a huge soundstage - great horizontal off axis response - are detailed without being analytical, and very neutral. I've tried them with some acoustic rock stuff like the Goo Goo Dolls, Eagles, Jimmy Buffett and it sounds fantastic. Dialogue is crystal clear on movies and TV - note that this is with a phantom center. They get loud enough with 50wpc that I can't turn them past -18db or so for fear of annoying neighbors. They have great bass down to around 50hz. I use a Playstation 3 as my primary source for music, dvds, and blu-rays.

Here are some earlier impressions I wrote and pictures:
