How about adoptive screen brightness feature? (if you dim the lights.....so does the screen and keyboard)

This seems a little too much on the ball - my screen dims a little sometimes when I don't think it should - ?

You might want to go to system preferences/energy saver/options and see if the box before "automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" is checked.
