preamp output impedance matching
« on: 19 Nov 2008, 09:20 pm »
Hi,

I was looking into a tube preamp for the Red Wine 30.2 integrated and came across an older Anthem pre1 that has the following output impedance:

OUTPUT IMPEDANCE: 390 ohms main outputs, Phono
520 ohms to tape outputs, Recommended load 50K-100K
ohms and 100pF (20K ohms minimum, 1000pF maximum)

As the 30.2 is 20K would this be a bad match?  I can see that the power amp version would be better, but I'm not sure I can go that route right now.

are you wanting to use the rwa as a stand-alone amp?  the 30.2 has a preamp input?  as long as the pre's main outs are<2kohms, and you don't also have wery long cabling between pre and the amp, then you should be fine.  w/390 ohms main output impedance, you are way below the standard rule-of-thumb 1:10 ration ore-out:amp-in.  you should even be able to run long ic's if you want...

Yes, I'd use the Anthem as a preamp for the 30.2.  I need phono and another line input for the 30.2.
I thought it met the 10:1 ratio, but when it recommended a 50-100K load I thought I'd double-check.

Hi Kingpin,

With an output impedance of 390 ohms, it will be totally fine driving the 30.2 integrated.

Also, from the 30.2 User's Manual:

Quote
You can connect the left and right RCA output jacks of an external preamp to the left and right RCA input jacks of your Signature 30.2.  You would then set the volume control of your Signature 30.2 to a position that would allow you the most useable range out of your preamp’s volume control.  Doing so will lower the noise floor of the preamp/Signature 30.2 combo.  In other words, setting the Signature 30.2’s precision volume control to the maximum output is NOT always the best solution when using an active preamp…especially one with a lot of gain.

Best regards,

Vinnie
