Compare the Benz vs Shelter vs Dynavector sound
« on: 30 Jan 2012, 06:44 am »
I am currently using a Benz Micro Ace HO cartridge on my VPI Aries Scout TT. I havent had any experience with LOMC cartridges. But now that I have a preamp with sufficient gain (Modwright LS100 is capable of 70dB in its built in phono stage), I'm thinking I might want to give one a try. A few that I have been reading a lot about are the following. Can anyone with experience compare/contrast the way these sound?

Benz Micro Wood SL
Shelter 501 II
Dynavector 20X2 Low

Also, what are your experiences going from a HOMC to a LOMC? Was it worth it?

You should post this inquiry in the LP forum. Most Denon users will inform you that those 3 cartridge brands compare very well to a Denon cartridge at about half the cost.

I used the Zu DL-103 with my Modwright LS100 and it sounds great. I now have a Koestsu as well, but the Zu holds it's own

I have actually considered the Zu DL-103 recently, so it's funny you mention it.

However, I have been concerned whether the high weight of this cartridge might make it a poor choice wih certain turntables and arms. Especially, with the VPI Scout and JMW-9 arm.

Can anyone help explain how the cartridge weight relates to the table/arm and what to expect?

Here's a site that might help you out.

I also have a VPI Scout with original JMW 9 tone arm, I believe the range for the arm is 7-12 grams for cart.
I have an Ortofon 2M Black cartridge, the weight is Cartridge weight 7.2 grams which is within the that range.
