Surround reccomendations to mate with SongTower
« on: 5 Nov 2008, 12:31 am »
Anyone have reccomendations for a surround speaker to match up with a pair of SongTower mains? Of course, I'd love a matching pair of SongSurrounds. Unfortunately, they don't fit the current budget situation.

I'd be using them 75% for surround music and 25% for movies. My preference is to wall mount them. I'm driving them with an Emotiva XPA-5 200 wpc amp.

I was hoping to keep my outlay under $300. I was looking at the ELT525M Mini Monitor over at AV123. No particular reason other than I understand AV123 offers pretty good bang for the buck and they seem like a nice looking speaker. Also, I see some references to clearance pricing on KEF IQ3.

I'm open to going used.

Any reccomendations greatly appreciated!

I'm in the same boat (have STs on order for the fronts). So I plan on using my M&K 750s as temporary rear channels.

For a high quality but not too expensive speaker, you might check out Hsu Research (www.hsuresearch.com). I bought a couple of the Ventriloquist speakers to use with a wireless setup (which didn't work out BTW). They are nice little speakers and would probably work just fine in a small room. If you think you might be interested in my Ventriloquist, send me a pm. They are just sitting in the closet.

Thanks for the response Atlplasma. The Ventriloquist speakers seem like they might be a little small for my tasts - especially since my surrounds will play a larger role than the typical movie effect. I already own a Hsu sub, so I'm a little familiar with the company. It seems their other speakers are horns, which I had assumed wouldn't match well with the SongTowers. Maybe I'm wrong about that though?

I'm using the same speakers for surround duty with the ST's that I've had for quite a while...NHT superzero's.  They are small, sound good, and fit my wife's requirements!  Unfortunately they don't make them anymore.  In your price range you could also look at Ascend HTM 200's or for a bit over $300 the Ascend CBM 170's.

I tried to convince a friend to buy the Hsu horns, but he was wary of SAF.  :nono:

It seems like there are lots of choices out there and probably some real bargains on the close-out and resale market. These Acculine speakers grabbed my attention while just skimming the agon site.

They seem to have some good specs and, at $159 pair, a great price. That said, I have no idea what they sound like or how well they would match up with the STs.

You might check out the Acculine Owners Thread at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=900045 and see how owners feel about them.

Those Acculine's are pretty appealing, especially given the price. I'm also giving serious consideration to the SVS SBS-01 and possibly the KEF iQ1. Anyone had experience with these?
