Stereo Sub Calibration Help
« on: 12 Nov 2008, 08:30 pm »
Hello,

I am trying to get the proper understanding for how to calibrate stereo subs.  If I take a reference level, say  70db and set the mains to output that level, what is the proper output for the subs?  I know about the correction tables so I will take that into account when using the SPL meter.  Do I calibrate each sub to a corrected 70 db or is each sub supposed to be set to 67db?  I had heard adding a second sub gives a 3 db increase in output.  Is this correct only when the subs are receiving the same combined L+R signal or does it hold true even when each sub is given only the L or R signal?  Thanks for any help!

If I were doing it, I would set them both to 70 db to start out.  Then I would play some sample music or DVD and see how it sounds.  If it is too much, I would back them off.  Too little, juice them up.

Also, it is not enough to get them to the right DB level.  You also need to get an equalizer to flatten the frequency response of the subs.

For me, I have mine playing the same DB as my speakers for 2 channel and I crank them up to be 3DB hot for a DVD (non concert).
