Wall-wart & Polyprop Caps for Piccolo
« on: 17 Nov 2008, 05:07 pm »
I am very serious about building the Piccolo half-kit so I've been looking up parts costs and availability at DigiKey.  So far everything is available except the 100nF Polyprop's (P3104) and the Wal-wart is discontinued.  They gave me numbers for suitable replacements  for the Wall-wart: T1021-P5RP-ND ($8.73) and T991-P5P-ND ($16.88).  I'm not sure if these are "suitable replacements" as they do not have the same spec's as the MT7145.  Anyone know if either of these Power Supplies are suitable and where I could get the 100nF Caps?  I don't want to order the 1/2-kit if all parts are not available.   In fact,  I just may order all the parts first.  Thanks,  Nick

Mouser part# 552-PLA01A-120-R looks like it will do the job.

Digikey shows P3104-ND in stock (9,592).

I'm using six 400V 0.1uF (=100nF) K40Y9 caps in place of the stock P3104.  If you want to use K40Y9, there are two ratings for 0.1uF - 200V and 400V.  The 200V are easier to solder as the leads thread through the holes on the board, whereas the 400V leads sit on the holes.  Either will work in place of P3104 and fit well in the stock enclosure.  I got my set from Tubes.

PM me if you want my removed set of P3104.  The K40Y9 is a definite improvement though.

Hmm, that's funny.  Yesterday their site showed NIS for the caps.  I guess they got some in just today.  Thanks,  Nick

Theo,  where do I get the K40Y9 caps?  Are they still available?  In what way did you notice an improvement over the stock caps?

I got my set from Jim (Tubesforever).  Check if he still has some that he can spare, or you should be able to find some from eBay.  I've posted my first impression of K40Y9 in my Piccolo on your previous thread.

I built this kit and have run it on several different 12vdc wal-warts, 12v batteries and am currently using a 20vdc laptop supply (my fave). It will run on almost any wal-wart between 9vdc and 24vdc.

You will be able to find one at Radio Shack and may have one just lying around that will work. 12vdc ones are very common.

Oh, I was thinking that if it said current output 100ma, power output 1w etc, etc. then that's what the unit (Piccolo) needs to run properly.  You're saying that the 120vac to 12vdc is pretty much all you need?  Thanks,  Nick

Yep, just don't go crazy on the current rating. You are unlikely to find one with enough current to cause harm.

Yeah, the wall wart can go as low as I think 5.5V or so.  I did it that way so a 6.3V filament string could power it nicely.  Also takes voltages pretty high, I forget exaclty.  Whatever you put in gets regulated down anyway.  Does not need so much headroom, but an electrically quiet supply can help.  Switchers can be bad.  Linear or unregulated is the way to go.

The MT7141 is a fine alternate.
