Preamp/Amp ?
« on: 3 Nov 2008, 03:23 pm »
If the amp does not add anything to the sound, just amplifying the signal from the preamp why do some claim there is a loss of  "tubiness" when going down the chain from a tube preamp to a solid state amp. In other words, some claim in order to get the holographic effect, 3D soundstage etc an all tube amp is needed with a tube preamp.

I disagree, it would depend on the speakers as to what kind of amp I would choose. If it were Maggies, then sure, I'd rather have a tube pre and a big SS amp, but for horns, I'd probably go all-tube. But as far as imaging and holographic effects go, I'd make sure the speakers and room are up to it first before worrying about what the rest of the signal chain is like.

Actually some of the best systems I've heard used a tubed pre and SS amp. ever try say a VAC pre with a Bryston amp ? just opinions. Try it yourself in your room you might be very surprised.
