Piccolo Purchase/Build Soon , Maybe?
« on: 9 Nov 2008, 02:10 am »
I am looking to possibly replace my Pickering PLZ head amp.  Sometime ago I replaced some resistors and some wire and lost the original resistors.  Now I am not sure what the value is supposed to be.  I was using it with a Rogue Model 99 Magnum Pre amp and it's built-in phono stage.  I use it in the MM mode because it's quieter and used the Pickering for low output MC's.  I noticed that with my Clearaudio Gamma that has the ruby cantilever from Soundsmith now sounds very sibilant on vocals but dosen't when I don't use the PLZ.  The resistors I replaced weren't the loading resistors but two that were closest to the loading resistors on the input side of the circuitboard.  I was wondering that if I had the wrong value installed, if that would  cause the distortion that I am hearing.  Anyhow,  I may have to replace the Pickering now and I thought the Piccolo would work.  I have some soldering experience but am no electronics engineer.  Any suggestions?   Battery power or not?  Parts sourced from DigiKey or someplace else or a combination of places?  Up-graded parts from the standard parts list?  I'd appreciate any help.  Thanks, Nick

My Piccolo is in use for 8 months and I've just upgraded the caps to 0.1uF (100nF) K40Y9 three day ago.  It was nice sounding with stock Panasonic caps but the K40Y9s are giving it more dynamics and tighter bass while retaining neutrality.  There is also marked improvement in mid-range clarity.  Vocal sounds more relaxed, natural, and rid of excessive glare of the stock Panasonic caps.  These PIOs are quite a bargain for under $2 a piece from Tubes.  They need 50 hours break in time, so hopefully even better sound to come.  I highly recommend the Piccolo with upgraded caps.  Of course you already know that loading and gain are customizable to your liking.  Go with the wallwart.  Better yet, I use a Bugle power supply.  It's a killer value DIY piece for under $200.

I have been reading through the threads for the Piccolo and have gotten some ideas of how the whole half kit diy project works.  I see there is plenty of help to be had if I get into trouble or just for tips and suggestions.  I do have experience soldering and own a soldering station.   I am by no means an electronic engineer or technician though.  Thanks,  Nick
