John Mayer

Somebodies got to like him I suppose. My issue with him is he's never played an original lick in his life. That and when he sings, he looks like a Muppet (Ernie specifically). Watch how when he opens his mouth to sing his head seems to be hinged at the jaw. His jaw stays still and the whole top of his head goes back...........did I ruin your John Mayer listening experience yet?  Do I need to refresh your memory about DK strapping on the feeder bag?          OK, I'll stop now.

Here's a few of mine;
Ornette Coleman
Coltrane (after his first couple of solo albums)
Miles (the later years, say post early 60s)
most of Wayne Shorter's stuff
the Dead
over-hyped, audiophile approved, female jazz singers

Generalities;
pop music
jam bands
smooth jazz
avant guarde (free) jazz (talk about WTF?)
opera
speed metal and thrash (type) rock where all they do is scream
most rap

I've never seen him perform Scott. Only heard the tunes, which I like by the way.
You know, I liked Celine Dion until I watched her sing. Sometime vocalists just shouldn't be seen, only heard.
{Joe Cocker comes to mind as one who shouldn't be watched while performing.}

Phish - seems to me a band of stellar musicians but not a single good songwriter.

Irish fiddle music - nails on a chalkboard...over and over and over again.

Nora Jones, I swear she puts me to sleep within two minutes. I've tried but can't get through an entire cd.

Well, luckily, there is no right or wrong answer, so here goes:

The last 20 years or so of Springsteen (his singing has gotten painful)
Most Rap/Hip Hop
Today's Country
Free form Jazz (Ornette Coleman)
Steve Tyrell (who told him he could sing, anyway )
What passes for lite Jazz

Crosby stills nash..oh year forgot about them.....they most definitely fall in the dont get category. the addition of neal young only seals the deal for some
I remember listening to some Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young compilation album and rating each track as "Rubbish, rubbish, good, rubbish, good, rubbish, rubbish" etc. Every single good one was with Young, every rubbish without Young, perfect correlation! YMMV.  :green: And by the way it was "blind"  aa  because I didn't peek beforehand and it was all new music for me at the time.

but what really got me was Pink Floyd.  Yeah, I know, acid music - intense lyrics (not!).  Not the most accomplished players, so they stayed with simple music and lots of sound effects.  Never quite got that one.
Hello! David Gilmour not the most accomplished player (YMMV :))?

"Intense lyrics (not!)". This is the band that gave us "Welcome to the Machine"!!! Truly our mileage varies. :)

About the only kind of music that really makes me want to cringe is "new" country and Christian rock. Old country used to be about wrasslin', gettin' drunk, cheatin' on your woman, etc. It's gotten like NASCAR; civilized, tame, packaged for commercial consumption. I may not like it, but at least I can respect it when it's honest :D

Oh, and I had a roommate that tortured me with "screamo" for three months. Not fun :(

And Kenny G.

I don't know if those fall under "well respected", though :)

I agree with Yanni, but I won't pick on him since he seems to be off the radar.  I never bought into the "Beatles are God" routine, but what really got me was Pink Floyd.  Yeah, I know, acid music - intense lyrics (not!).  Not the most accomplished players, so they stayed with simple music and lots of sound effects.  Never quite got that one.

Sorry, BobRex, but you are officially kicked out of AC for that Pink Floyd comment.

Stuff I started out not getting but ended up loving:

Wilco
Dylan
The Pixies
The Minutemen
X
Television

Stuff I've given up trying to understand why people like them:

Steely Dan
Doobie Brothers
Seals and Crofts
Boston
Joni Mitchell
Janis Ian (her later stuff. I can understand why someone might like her early stuff)
Tom Waites
and anything Clapton has done since he left Cream...

Not that I'm incapable of getting it, I just don't want to get it -

Beatles
U2
REM
Dave Matthews
Coldplay
Radiohead
Rush
Greatfull Dead
Rolling Stones
The Who
Beach Boys

These bands are like Scotch to me.  A lot of people love it, but why torture yourself trying to acquire a taste?  I have better things to do that try to force myself to like something because others say its significant.

I'm a huge Zeppelin fan, but why is Zep 4 so popular?  Besides Coda (which is understandably not their greatest work), its easily my least favorite Zep album.  Compared to everything else they've done, I think it sucks.  Especially Stairway.  The ending is great, but its torture sitting through the first 5 minutes or so to get to the ending.  Then it sucks again with the "...and she's buyyyyying a staaaaaaaair way to heaven" part.

Fun thread BTW.
