DIY Corner Traps on an Island
« on: 14 Oct 2008, 04:06 pm »
Some questions for the group.

I am trying to build DIY corner bass absorbers.  I live on a Caribbean island, so importing pro absorbers or even insulation is out of the question because of shipping costs.  I’m stuck with the fluffy stuff that is available on island.

My plan is to build 4*8’ frames out of 1*2”s, to staple wire fencing on the wall side of the frame, to pack down 18” of insulation to about 6”, then to put plastic film and fabric in the front and staple it around the back of the frame.

So the plastic and fabric stapled around the back will squish down the insulation.

My questions are this,

1)   is this the best build; and,
2)   since I am using it for bass, does it matter if I use cotton fabric instead of burlap?

Thanks for your help!

Your plans sounds pretty much perfect.

Should work just fine.  As for the cloth, it all depends on the specific material and how much high frequency it will introduce and how much you'll tolerate.    Something like a Muslin is pretty inert acoustically in this application.  I wouldn't use it in front of speakers but here it should be fine and it's inexpensive if available to you.

Thanks so much guys.  Audio karma to both of you, may what goes around come around, all that good stuff...

Let me know if you need a place to stay on a sun drenched island some time.

Fellas-  Would plastic film be a right thing is this application?  Syrah, you wouldn't happen to be female, would you?

It could be depending on the density of the plastic and the amount of HF rolloff desired.

I was thinking of using plastic sheets from a hardware store available in rolls, like the kind used for a vapour barrier.  Would I be better off with paper?

I was. My wife was sick of winter. Can't blame her. Although I could live without hurricanes.

Bryan-  Excuse my ignorance but wouldn't chicken wire be better?

The idea with the plastic is to provide a membrane effect and also to mitigate some of the upper mid and high frequency absorption so as to not overdeaden things.
