Got my Dynaco Insight 240 Amp today.....
« on: 19 Nov 2008, 01:39 am »
It's a Dyna ST-150 with Meters rebuilt as a Insight 240. Frank did a great job. I hooked it up with a old Dyna Pat-4 Omega 2  and it sounds great. My new Dyna Pat-5 Insight and Insight DAC should be here within a couple of weeks and then I should really know how great it will sound......

That's what everyone is telling me. Have not been involved with custom Stereo since the 70's. Back then I was building Dynaco kits and building my own speaker cabinets. Went to an old friends house a couple of years ago he has a great system and I got the fever. His advice to me was check out the new stuff thats out there. So I started searching the web and found Audio by Van Alstine and what even made it better was Frank was into modding the old Dyna & hafler gear. And I got a  bunch and to keep the old retro look I decided to let him rebuild some of my old Dyna gear. Until I started Visiting AudioCircle I had no idea how things have changed. I figured that Digital would have to sound better but I was wrong. And I read what you guys are saying about a DAC. My records have been gone for years which has turned out to be a terrible decision. I might pick me up another turntable and start buying some records but for now I have Tons of CD's and with the DAC maybe I can enjoy them. Thanks Billy

Yes, you will enjoy your CDs.  If you decide to purchase a turntable, you can pick up a used turntable, such as an AR, for approximately $300.00-$400.00.  (Wayner will advise you about cartridge selection  :D)   A decent turntable and cartridge will ordinarily sound better than a CDP/DAC combination (to varying degrees, I assume), in my limited experience with CDP/DAC combinations.  The Insight DAC produces a very high quality source, however, and with CDs' availability and convenience, the Insight DAC/CDP combination is a viable or perhaps preferable alternative to LPs.  I have been buying both LPs and CDs, lately, and I enjoy both.  CDs are a lot more convenient, however.
