Can I do this? (Speakers and amp pairing)
« on: 11 Sep 2008, 04:03 pm »
I've got a set of Klipsch Pro-Media 4.1 V2 I am using as a 2.1 system.  What I'm doing is running them at the end of a chain which includes my PC/a Sony disc-changer, both running to a CI Audio DAC then to a Woo Audio headphone amp being used as a preamp.  The signal then runs to the powered Klipsch system.

In the end, I want to be rid of the Klipsch system.  So, I am going piece by piece.  What I want to do right now is replace the front satellites (60 watts @ 4 ohms) with something in the 200-400 USD range like the Monitor Audio BRs or Polk Audio RT line.  I would assume that if I get something rated to handle at least 30 watts @ 8 ohms, I should be okay.  Eventually, I will be replacing the Klipsch amp.  So what do you guys think?

Thanks for any input.

Hi MGL,

I don't see why not. They'll sing. I just don't know if they'll sing well. :? I googled the Klipschs and BASH amplifier built into your sub for L and R use appears to have enough juice based on the max SPL figures even when presumed to be at 1 meter to drive the 2 models you mentioned. The specs however didn't indicate what the crossover frequency from Sats to Sub are, whether the crossover from bass to mid is active or passive or whether the sub portion's gain is adjustable. If the system is pure plug and play with only a volume control like my AEG02, the odds of integrating new sats IMO might not be very good and you'll find yourself looking for an amp sooner than you'd hoped.

Anyhow, good luck!

Jack

Thanks Jack,

The sub actually does have a gain adjust.  So, I can just turn it off completely.  I figured on playing with the sub a little with whatever speakers I may get.  I also don't know the specifics on the crossover frequency for the bass, though.

Thanks for the reply.
